Celtic’s unbeaten run in the Scottish Premiership was brought to an abrupt halt earlier this week as they went down 3-0 at Old Firm rivals Rangers and they will be keen to bounce back with three points when St Mirren visit Parkhead on Sunday.
The Glasgow giants still have a healthy 11-point lead at the top of the standings and they remain firmly in the driving seat in what has been a particularly one-sided title battle, but they won’t want to give up any more ground to their city rivals.
St Mirren are enjoying a strong season themselves as they sit in fifth spot, but they arrive at Celtic as huge underdogs and getting any kind of result looks a tall order for the visitors.
Celtic over 3.5 team goals - 6/4
Celtic are massive favourites to win this game at 1/10 and deservedly so given they have been close to perfect at home, collecting 25 points from a possible 27 at Parkhead in the league.
Backing Celtic in the handicap markets is one way to get a bigger price and siding with the hosts and a -3 handicap at 2/1 looks interesting, but the better play could be going for the home side to score over 3.5 goals.
Celtic netted three goals in a 3-0 win at St Mirren’s SMISA Stadium earlier this season. These two sides met three times in 2024 and Celtic scored exactly three goals on each occasion, and they may be able to go at least one better in the first meeting of 2025.
Manager Brendan Rodgers will demand a response after the 3-0 Old Firm defeat and that could be bad news for St Mirren, who arrive in the midst of a rough patch after back-to-back defeats.
Celtic score on average 3.2 goals per-game at home in the Premiership and they’ve netted at least four goals in five of their last six domestic home games - hitting 22 goals in total during that run - so over 3.5 goals looks an achievable target for the Premiership pacesetters.
Nicolas Kuhn to score any time - 11/8
Nicolas Kuhn has been in decent form for Celtic over the last few weeks and he had scored in three consecutive fixtures prior to this week’s defeat at Ibrox.
The 25-year-old German provided an assist at St Mirren Park when Celtic last faced the Buddies and can get on the scoresheet himself in this latest meeting.
Kuhn averages a solid 1.9 attempts-per-game in the league and gets over half of his efforts on target, so he looks a decent odds-against option to grab a goal in a game where Celtic could score a few.
Scott Tanser to be shown a red card - 33/1
Scott Tanser had never been sent off in his career until this season but the 30-year-old has been shown his marching orders twice in 16 Premiership appearances to date in 2024/25.
Tanser is a tempting 10/3 to be booked, but sometimes it is worth taking a risk on a big price and at 33/1 he looks a decent value play to be sent off.
The Englishman could well be tasked with keeping Celtic’s Daizen Maeda and Paulo Bernardo quiet at various points on Sunday and both have a habit of drawing fouls - so a Tanser dismissal isn’t out of the question.
