Celtic v St Johnstone: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Celtic can move back to the top of the Scottish Premiership standings, but only if they claim all three points when St Johnstone visit Parkhead on Saturday.

Brendan Rodgers' side head into the weekend sitting two points behind Rangers in the title race, but with the Gers not in action until Sunday they have an opportunity to return to the summit and put the pressure on their Old Firm rivals.

Saints are facing their own battles at the wrong end of the Premiership, but Craig Levein has seen his side pick up four points from their last two matches and they did draw 0-0 on their last visit to Parkhead in August.

Celtic v St Johnstone betting tips and predictions

Celtic to win and both teams to score - 2/1

By their own high standards, it has been an underwhelming season to date for Celtic, with recent dropped points against Hearts and Kilmarnock seeing them fall behind Rangers at the top of the Premiership standings.

However, it is not all doom and gloom for the Bhoys, who could still end the season with a league and cup double after they booked their place in the Scottish Cup semi-finals with last weekend's 4-2 home success over Livingston.

Scoring goals has certainly not been a problem for Celtic, as they are the leading scorers in the Premiership with 68 goals, but keeping them out at the other end has not been as straightforward, particularly of late.

Celtic are without a clean-sheet in any of their previous five matches in all competitions and their only shutout across their last eight games was against St Mirren in the Scottish Cup.

That will give the visitors hope of at least getting on the scoresheet at Parkhead, as even though they are the lowest away scorers in the division with just six goals, four of those strikes have come across their last four road fixtures.

The Saints have also scored in four of their last five meetings, home or away, with Celtic, including in a 3-1 defeat when the two sides last locked horns at McDiarmid Park in December.

Daizen Maeda to score anytime - 6/5

Japan international Daizen Maeda is by no means Celtic's most prolific forward but he is in a rich vein of form after scoring four goals across his last two appearances at Parkhead, including a hat-trick in last weekend's cup win over Livingston.

That has taken the 26-year-old's tally for the season to eight and six of those strikes have come since the turn of the year despite the fact he also spent time away representing his country at the Asian Cup.

After his three-goal haul against Livi, it would be a shock if Maeda did not retain his place in Rodgers' starting XI for this game, making the 6/5 for him to score anytime all the more appealing.

It is 28/1 that Maeda grabs a hat-trick for the second match running and although that may be unlikely, the in-form former Yokohama F. Marinos ace can have a crucial say on Saturday.

Half-time double chance - Draw or St Johnstone - 7/4

Celtic have made hard work of a number of matches over recent weeks as they have been behind at half-time in two of their last four games against Motherwell and Hearts.

While they were able to come back to win against Motherwell after trailing 1-0 at the break, they didn't enjoy the same success when visiting Hearts, as they lost that game 2-0.

The Bhoys have also laboured in their two meetings with St Johnstone this season, as the two teams drew 0-0 at Parkhead in August, while the Saints led at the break during the reverse clash in Perth before succumbing to a 3-1 defeat.

It could be a similar story on Saturday and it is 7/4 for St Johnstone to be level or winning at the break in the half-time double chance market, although they may not be able to hold out for a result until the final whistle.
