Burnley v Sheffield Wednesday: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Burnley have not conceded a goal in their last 11 Championship matches and the Clarets can just get the edge of Sheffield Wednesday on Friday as the Owls go in search of their eighth second-tier away success of the campaign.

Burnley v Sheffield Wednesday betting tips and predictions

Burnley to win & under 2.5 goals - 9/4

Burnley have been earning plenty of plaudits for their defensive qualities after keeping 11 successive Championship clean sheets, but this is a key weekend in the promotion race and they need to make up ground.

The top two of Sheffield United and Leeds United meet at Bramall Lane in a crunch battle on Monday, and Scott Parker’s men need to find their goalscoring touch when Sheffield Wednesday visit Turf Moor on Friday night to stay in touch in the race for automatic promotion.

The Clarets have a five-point gap separating them from the second-placed Blades and while Parker can only be delighted that his team have conceded just nine goals in 33 league games, they need to find their form at the other end having been held to six goalless draws in their last 10 outings.

An extra attacking emphasis can see them over the line against the Owls, but the fact that only four teams have conceded more goals in the Championship than the seventh-placed visitors should also play into the Clarets hands.

Danny Rohl’s visitors have won seven away matches this term and posted recent successes at QPR and Swansea City, but they haven’t quite cut the mustard when visiting the best teams in the division.

The only two occasions when they have failed to score in their last 12 away games were against the top two while they also fell to a 4-0 loss at fourth-placed Sunderland in August.

So it is a bit of a leap of faith to back them to make much of an impression and with their hosts also struggling in the final third, backing a Burnley win with under 2.5 goals looks the best way forward, given that has happened in three of their last four games in all competitions.

Jaidon Anthony to have a shot on target - 5/6

Burnley's total of 114 shots on target is in the bottom eight of the Championship standings, but one player who is not afraid to have a pop at goal is wideman Jaiden Anthony.

He has scored just three goals this season, the most recent of which came in the 2-1 win over Watford on December 21, but he has had more than one goal attempt in eight of his 11 subsequent league outings.

Anthony tested the goalkeeper twice in his last Turf Moor appearance when the Clarets posted a 2-0 success over Hull City and it is worth chancing that he will be able to repeat the dose at least once when the Owls come to town this weekend.

Over 10 corners - 11/10

While goals are expected to be in short supply at Turf Moor, there appears to be a decent chance that the corner count could be substantial.

Burnley average 6.75 per home match, which is the sixth-highest figure in the second tier and while their average of 2.5 against in home fixtures is the second lowest only to leaders Leeds, Wednesday have put up some hefty flag-kick numbers.

The Owls' average of 6.31 per away game is the highest of any team in the Championship and they have attacked in wide areas to post some notable tallies when visiting the division’s leading lights.

They had six on their trips to Elland Road and in the Steel City derby at Bramall Lane, while they also mustered eight in that early-season loss at Sunderland, so backing more than 10 on this trip to Lancashire looks a worthwhile bet.
