Altrincham will be looking to end their dismal run against Bromley when they arrive at Hayes Lane this Sunday with a place in the National League play-off final on the line.
Both clubs are vying to play in the Football League for the first time and will be eager to take a huge step in making that dream a reality by booking a place at Wembley.
With so much on the line it promises to be an intriguing affair when the pair, who finished third and fourth respectively in the final league standings, clash at Hayes Lane.
Bromley to win - 6/5
Bromley finished only four points higher than Altrincham in the National League, suggesting it may come down to fine margins to split the pair on Sunday, but one huge factor is in the hosts’ favour - home advantage.
The Ravens had the fourth-best home record in the National League this season and claimed plenty of notable results in doing so, beating the runaway champions Chesterfield and fifth-placed Solihull Moors at Hayes Lane this term, and that could help them over the line against the Robins, who struggled somewhat on the road over the course of the campaign.
Phil Parkinson’s side mustered up only 31 points on their travels in the regular season - the worst record of any side in the top seven - which suggests they could struggle at Hayes Lane, as they regularly do.
In the league clash there this term, Altrincham could only manage a 2-2 draw despite Bromley being reduced to 10 men from the 57th minute onwards. The Robins conceded even with a man advantage and needed an excellent 93rd-minute free-kick from Alex Newby to even rescue a point.
That draw sums up the issues Alty have had against the Ravens over the years, with their winless run against Bromley now standing at nine games and dating back to 2015, and they look unlikely to snap that streak on Sunday.
Altrincham’s last four away games yielded 10 points, but those matches came against sides all in the bottom six and they had lost four road fixtures in a row prior to that run. An away win looks unlikely and the hosts, with their wealth of experienced stars including Antigua and Barbuda international Myles Weston, can book their place at Wembley with a win within regulation time.
Both teams to score - 4/7
While a win may be beyond Altrincham, it does seem likely they will score at Hayes Lane. They have netted on four of their last five visits to Bromley and the form of their forwards suggests they can make that five in six on Sunday.
Chris Conn-Clarke has enjoyed an excellent season playing just off the Robins’ strikers, netting 23 goals in his 46 league appearances, and he is not the only player to have performed brilliantly this term.
Newby scored both of the Robins’ goals in the last clash between Altrincham and Bromley and notched 12 all season, making him the side’s third-top scorer behind Conn-Clarke and midfielder Regan Linney, who scored 13.
Alty have plenty of goalscorers and should net at Hayes Lane. Four of their last seven away games have seen both teams find the net while the same bet has landed in four of Bromley’s last five matches.
There is little doubt that Bromley will score too. Their squad is littered with talent, from 21-goal Michael Cheek to Brentford loanee Ben Krauhaus, and they scored 45 goals in their 23 regular-season home matches.
Combining both teams to score with our first tip of a Bromley win could prove profitable, with a price of 3/1 appealing for such a selection.
Olufela Olomola to score anytime - 11/4
Altrincham conceded 10 goals in their last four away games against sides not in the bottom six, and their defensive frailties could come to the fore and give Andy Woodman’s hosts plenty of opportunities to strike.
The Ravens can be ruthless on their own patch, as shown when putting three past Solihull and four past Chesterfield, and nailing down exactly who will do the damage can be a difficult task given the plethora of talent in their ranks.
Cheek rates the obvious contender, given his 21-goal haul in the regular season, but the former Braintree striker has scored only three times in his last 11 appearances and blanked in Bromley’s last two clashes with Alty, making the 13/8 about him scoring seem a tad short.
As a result, the man who stepped up in the last meeting between the pair, Olufela Olomola, appeals at bigger odds of 11/4. The forward missed three consecutive games at the back-end of the campaign, but returned on the final day and made his mark by netting the Ravens’ only goal to reach double digits for the season.
He lasted 68 minutes in that match, suggesting he is being saved for this huge tie, and given he netted a brace in the 2-2 draw with Altrincham back in December, he rates a solid bet to make an impact in this semi-final.
