Chelsea are firmly in control of the Women’s Super League title race, but they were almost caught off guard by Everton in their last game and Brighton could represent a tricky test at Crawley, where the Seagulls are undefeated in their seven home matches this term.
Chelsea to win & both teams to score - 15/8
Chelsea have just eight more games to navigate as they look to secure their sixth Women’s Super League title and it seems highly unlikely that they will allow a seven-point lead to slip as they have dropped just two points all season.
However, manager Sonia Bompastor, who has overseen a seamless transition following Emma Hayes’s departure, will have to ensure her charges are still at the top of their game and there is potential for Brighton to get onto the scoresheet in Sunday’s match at Crawley.
Chelsea have kept nine clean sheets this season, but Brighton did score twice against them when the teams met in the reverse fixture.
The champions won 4-2 on that occasion, but they were stung by Everton in their final game before last week’s international break and needed a last-gasp goal to give them a 2-1 win.
Brighton should be desperate to get on the front foot as they look to end a run of six matches without a win, but they have been undefeated in their seven games at Broadfield Stadium, which will encourage them that they can get on the scoresheet, even if they are unable to claim any points against the runaway leaders.
Lauren James to score at any time - 11/10
Chelsea could be in a position to unwrap world record signing Naomi Girma for a debut following her move from San Diego Wave, but there will be just as much excitement that playmaker Lauren James is back at the top of her game.
The Lioness forward missed eight WSL gameweeks with a calf injury, but now looks intent on making up for lost time as she hopes to guide her team to another domestic triumph and a strong tilt at their first UEFA Women’s Champions League success.
James popped up with the crucial goal in injury time when Chelsea secured a 2-1 win over Everton last time out and she has had a total of seven goal efforts in her two starts since she returned to action.
It could be a case that she is beginning to find her feet after her return to first-team action and she looks an attractive price to find the net again when she faces the Seagulls.
Nikita Parris to have a shot on target - 13/8
Nikita Parris has been a star performer in the Women’s Super League for several seasons at Arsenal and Manchester City and she can still make a big impression against the champions this weekend.
The 30-year-old forward scored her fifth goal of the campaign in her last appearances, a 3-1 defeat to West Ham, and has not been afraid to try her luck in recent matches.
Parris has had a total of 24 goal attempts in her last nine WSL outings and registered at least one shot on target in six of those matches, so it would not be a surprise if she tested the Chelsea goalkeeper at Broadfield Stadium.
