Brighton v Wolves: Prediction, Tips and Odds

A point against Manchester City would have been huge for Wolves’ survival hopes but, as is so often the case in the Premier League, a valuable draw was snatched away from them in dramatic fashion, as John Stones’ header gave the champions all three points.

That result has left Wanderers rooted to the foot of the table with just a solitary point and confidence at an all-time low.

Gary O’Neil needs to find a solution to his side’s multitude of issues soon, but a trip south to face Brighton is unlikely to provide the tonic given the Seagulls are flying high in fifth, with Fabian Hurzeler’s men in great form of late.

Brighton v Wolves betting tips and predictions

Brighton to win and both teams to score @ 15/8

Life under Hurzeler could not have started much better for Brighton, with the German winning six of his opening 10 games in charge and leading the Seagulls to the lofty position of fifth in the Premier League.

Confidence couldn’t be higher in the Brighton camp either, with Hurzeler’s men picking up two sensational results in their last couple of outings. The Seagulls came from two goals behind to beat Tottenham in their last home match before following up with an impressive 1-0 win over Newcastle at St James’ Park, two results which will put the fear into an already miserable Wolves.

Stones’ last-gasp header means Wanderers have now lost six matches in a row in a run which has seen them concede 17 goals. A record of five defeats in their last seven meetings with Brighton will not help the already-low confidence either and it looks like it will be another afternoon to forget for Wolves on Saturday.

However, they may just have enough to net in defeat at the Amex Stadium, just as they have done while losing their last six matches. Wanderers netted three at Brentford in their last away game and in Matheus Cunha and Jorgen Strand Larsen - the latter of which was on target against Manchester City - they do have the forwards to hurt teams.

Brighton are unbeaten at home this term and should have enough to see off the basement boys, but they have conceded two goals in each of their last three games at the Amex - a 3-2 win over Wolves in the League Cup started that run - and are likely to concede on their way to three points.

Joao Gomes to be booked @ 8/5

With just a solitary point to show for their efforts this term, frustration is understandably high at Wolves, and their players have not been shy in showing their ire.

Only Chelsea have received more yellow cards than Wanderers in the Premier League this term and up against a tricky Brighton outfit, a few of their players could find themselves in the referee’s book once more.

Joao Gomes has already picked up four yellow cards in the league this season and his price is big enough to consider backing the Brazilian to earn a fifth caution of the campaign.

No Premier League player has committed more fouls than Gomes’ 20 and up against a talented midfield two of Carlos Baleba and Jack Hinshelwood while also having to help deal with Brighton’s chief playmaker Georginio Rutter, he could find his name in the book again.

Lewis Dunk anytime goalscorer @ 15/2

There are a multitude of reasons as to why Wolves are rock-bottom in the Premier League, but one which must be fixed quickly if they are to have any chance of survival is their weakness in defending set-pieces.

No Premier League side has conceded more set-piece goals than Wolves’ seven this term and it was a corner which saw them drop a valuable point against Manchester City last Sunday.

O’Neil will no doubt have worked on a defensive plan from set-pieces throughout the week, but six days is unlikely to have been long enough to make a meaningful difference.

That is bad news given no Premier League side can better Brighton’s set-piece goal tally of four this season, suggesting it may be worth taking a punt on a Seagulls defender to find the net at a big price.

Brighton captain Lewis Dunk is usually the target from corners and the big defender could cause Wolves all sorts of issues on Saturday, just as he has done in the past, with the Englishman’s tally of two versus Wanderers his best return against any opponent in the Premier League.

Dunk has registered shots against Everton and Ipswich this season and with Wolves playing at a similar level to those sides, it could be worth backing the Seagulls skipper to net on Saturday.
