Aston Villa have notoriously struggled in Premier League matches on the back of a midweek UEFA Champions League fixture and that could be the case again as they travel to face an in-form Brentford on Saturday.
The Villans claimed a vital first-leg lead in their Champions League last-16 tie with Club Brugge on Tuesday, winning 3-1 in Belgium, but they have been anything but convincing in the Premier League of late.
Unai Emery’s side have dropped to 10th in the table following a run of only one win in seven and they were readily brushed aside 4-1 away at Crystal Palace last time out.
Brentford, meanwhile, have taken 10 points from their last five league games and they have had a much-needed 10-day break ahead of this contest.
That is unlike Villa, who were in Champions League action in Belgium only four days ago, and that could leave them underprepared for their trip to the Gtech Community Stadium.
Brentford to win - 5/4
Aston Villa have found it difficult balancing their Champions League commitments with the Premier League and those struggles could be evident on Saturday’s trip to Brentford.
Villa have won only one of their eight Premier League matches to have directly followed a midweek Champions League fixture and that includes a 2-0 defeat at Wolves in the most recent of those.
Therefore, just four days on from a 3-1 win over Club Brugge in Belgium, the Villans have plenty to prove and that is before you factor in that they have prevailed in only one of their last seven league games.
That leaves Villa tenth in the top-flight, only one place and four points above Brentford who have a game in hand, and the Bees should be rejuvenated following a ten-day break.
Brentford have gone six home league games without a win but they have faced Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester City, Nottingham Forest and a rejuvenated Everton in that period.
Prior to that, the Bees had won seven of their opening eight home league games and their only two defeats in their last eight league outings have come at the hands of Liverpool and Spurs.
Villa have lost seven of their last nine away league matches and that doesn’t bode well for a trip to an in-form Brentford, who have won three of their last five in the top-flight.
Yoane Wissa to score anytime - 15/8
In Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa, Brentford have two potent weapons capable of exploiting a Villa side that have kept only one clean sheet in 13 league games.
Mbeumo is Brentford’s leading scorer with 15 goals in 27 appearances but Wissa is only two behind and could have a starring role to play with confidence brimming.
The DR Congo international has netted in Brentford’s last two league matches against Leicester and Everton and he was on target when this pair drew 3-3 at Villa Park last season.
Morgan Rogers to be shown a card - 3/1
There have been at least four cards in each of the last four Premier League meetings between these sides and the pace and power on show could contribute to another fiery encounter.
Aston Villa hotshot Morgan Rogers continues to showcase his attacking talents but he has also displayed ill-discipline this season, collecting ten yellow cards in 39 appearances in all competitions this season.
Rogers’s hard work on and off the ball often leaves him to committing fouls and he has given away 41 in the Premier League this season, more than any other Villa player.
