Brazil v Colombia: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Brazil opened their 2024 Copa America challenge with a disappointing 0-0 draw against Costa Rica but they are approaching their final Group D fixture against Colombia in Santa Clara on Wednesday knowing that a point would seal progression to the quarter-finals and a victory would take them through in first place.

While Brazil have a little more work to do, Colombia’s place in the final eight at the Copa America is assured after they completed victories over Paraguay (2-1) and Costa Rica (3-0).

The Colombians are on a 25-match unbeaten run and have been victorious in their last 10 games, including last November’s 2-1 triumph at home to Brazil in World Cup qualifying.

However, they have generally struggled against Brazil, winning only four of 36 meetings between the teams.

Brazil v Colombia

Brazil v Colombia betting tips and predictions

Brazil and over 2.5 goals - 21/10

Brazil have experienced Copa America group stage eliminations on just two occasions (1987 and 2016) and they can avoid the same fate at USA 2024 by defeating Colombia at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.

Dorival Junior’s side sit second in Group D - two points adrift of leaders Colombia and three ahead of third-placed Costa Rica, who have a minus three goal difference.

It would take an extremely unlikely pair of results for the Brazilians to slip out of the top two, but they will be fully focused on the task in hand and have the added incentive of knowing that a victory would see them displace Colombia from first place.

Finishing top looks like a prize worth fighting for because it would set up a quarter-final clash against Panama rather than a more difficult last eight clash against Uruguay.

Colombia will be aware of the importance of the game but their head coach Nestor Lorenzo must also weigh up whether it would be beneficial to make a few changes and perhaps protect midfielders Jefferson Lerma and Richard Rios and centre-forward Jhon Cordoba, who are all one booking away from a suspension.

There seems a lesser chance of multiple changes for the Brazilians, who simply cannot afford to risk a defeat and potential elimination.

The Samba Stars are likely to be close to full strength and they can build on Saturday’s 4-1 success over Paraguay by registering another high-scoring victory.

Vinicius Junior to score or assist - 21/20

Vinicius Junior has taken a while to fully adjust to international football but he took his goal tally to five for Brazil with a double in the weekend victory over Paraguay and he could play a key role in ending Colombia’s extraordinary 25-game unbeaten sequence.

The 23-year-old Real Madrid superstar contributed six goals and four assists in the 2023/24 Champions League and he can either create or score at least one goal against the Colombians.

Jhon Arias to be carded - 3/1

Contests between Brazil and Colombia are usually ultra-competitive and their California clash is unlikely to be any different.

Brazil know that they are potentially one bad result away from being knocked out of the competition while Colombia will be keen to gain a psychological edge over an opponent they might have to face in a semi-final at a later stage of the competition.

There should be plenty of robust challenges and that is unlikely to faze Colombia attacking midfielder Jhon Arias, who enjoys the physical side of the game.

Arias is top of Colombia’s Copa America foul count with seven although he is yet to be booked.

The 26-year-old is unlikely to change his approach and he looks a worthwhile 3/1 wager to enter Venezuelan referee Jesus Valenzuela’s notebook.
