Borussia Dortmund take on Monterrey in the last 16 at the FIFA Club World Cup in the early hours of Wednesday morning and the German giants may have to work hard in Atlanta if they are to reach the quarters.
Niko Kovac oversaw a strong end to the season at Borussia Dortmund and their form has continued at the FIFA Club World Cup. BVB are now unbeaten in 10 and overcame some nervy moments to top their group in the US.
Their reward for landing top spot is a last-16 clash with Monterrey, although the Mexican side may be fancying their chances at pulling off a shock after drawing with Inter during the group stage and watching both the Nerazzurri and Manchester City crash out prior to this tie.
Both teams showed plenty of attacking intent in the group stage and it would be no surprise to see a thrilling encounter at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Best Bet: Both Teams to Score @ 7/10
Dortmund come into this last-16 clash as odds-on favourites, but their group-stage performances did little to suggest a match in the Atlanta heat against a talented Monterrey side will be anything but straightforward.
BVB were held to a 0-0 draw by Fluminense before narrow 4-3 and 1-0 wins over Mamelodi Sundowns and Ulsan. The three goals they shipped against Mamelodi stand out in particular and there is every chance Monterrey can net on Wednesday morning.
The Mexican side netted against Inter in their opener and later put four past Urawa, suggesting they have enough firepower to contribute to a thrilling last-16 tie at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Jamie Griffith explains:
I can’t get over the fact Dortmund shipped three goals to Mamelodi in the group stage and I see no reason why a talented Monterrey side can’t punish that poor defence in the last 16.
Borussia Dortmund to qualify
German Berterame to score
Jobe Bellingham 1+ shot on target
Pays 10/1
Although it may not be straightforward, and extra-time could be required, Borussia Dortmund are unbeaten in 10 matches for a reason and should have enough to reach the quarter-finals.
Keeping Monterrey out is another challenge entirely, though, and Rayados’ in-form striker German Berterame, who netted a brace last time to make it five goals in his previous seven appearances, should make an impact in Atlanta.
Close out your Bet Builder by backing Dortmund’s latest wonderkid to continue his bright start under Kovac. Jobe Bellingham has racked up seven shots in his two Borussia starts, getting two on target and bagging a first BVB goal in the process, and should shine again on Wednesday.

Jamie Griffith adds:
Dortmund made hard work of an easy section, but they have more than enough brilliant attackers to see them through to the quarters. They may not, however, have enough to keep out Berterame, who netted a brace last time. Jobe Bellingham should help BVB’s chances, though he looks like another star in the making.

Borussia Dortmund will have to do without Jamie Gittens for this clash as he prepares for a move to Chelsea, meaning Bellingham and Julian Brandt should continue to support Serhou Guirassy in the front three of Kovac’s 3-4-2-1 system.
(3-4-2-1): Kobel; Ryerson, Anton, Bensebaini; Couto, Sabitzer, Nmecha, Svensson; Adeyemi, Bellingham; Guirassy.
Midfielder Jorge Rodriguez is back from suspension and should slot into Monterrey’s midfield three. Former La Liga stars Sergio Ramos, Lucas Ocampos and Sergio Canales make up an experienced and talented squad.
(4-3-1-2): Andrada; Chavez, Medina, Ramos, Arteaga; Deossa, Rodriguez, Torres; Corona; Berterame, Alvarado.
