League One Bolton are under huge pressure after Saturday’s 5-0 loss away to Stockport but they can scrape through to the knockout rounds of the EFL Trophy with a draw at home to League Two Fleetwood in their Lancashire tussle.
Bolton boss Ian Evatt had hoped to get his team featuring prominently in the League One promotion race, but he will be feeling the heat following a disappointing start to the campaign.
Evatt’s side have been far too inconsistent and their embarrassing weekend reverse at Stockport has left them 10th in the third-tier standings.
However, they are well placed in Northern Section Group D of the EFL Trophy after taking four points from two games.
Fleetwood are a point worse off and will be making the trip with the aim of pulling off a shock victory.
They approach the contest in good spirits after a hard-fought 1-0 League Two success at home to Bradford on Saturday.
Draw - 16/5
Bolton need only a draw to clinch a place in the EFL Trophy knockout stage and that may be the outcome when they take on Fleetwood at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.
The Trotters are much more concerned with winning promotion than making EFL Trophy progress but they will be keen to raise standards after their dismal weekend performance.
There were mitigating factors behind the dismal loss at Stockport with illness striking the Bolton camp in the days leading up to the game.
But the manner of the reverse was tough to take with three of the five goals having been conceded within a disastrous 16-minute second-half spell.
Bolton do not return to League One action until November 23rd, so their immediate focus will be on the clash against Fleetwood, which promises to be a tricky test.
Fleetwood were relegated from League One last season and have had a mixed start to life in League Two with 21 points collected from 14 games.
But they were impressive 1-0 winners at home to Bradford on Saturday and have risen to a couple of tougher challenges in the EFL Cup by posting wins at home to West Brom (2-1) and Rotherham (2-1).
The Cod Army’s EFL Cup run ended with a 1-1 draw and a penalty shootout loss away to Stoke, but there is an opportunity for them to claim another scalp in a different competition this time.
Fleetwood’s scheduled weekend fixture at Tranmere has been postponed and their manager, Charlie Adam, has admitted that he could ‘go strong’ with his team selection.
Adam’s team could give Bolton a serious examination but they may fall just short of getting the win they are looking for.
Fleetwood to score the first goal - 21/10
Fleetwood had to come from behind to seal their EFL Cup successes at home to West Brom and Rotherham but they look overpriced to land the first blow against Bolton.
There are bound to be a few nerves flying around in the Bolton camp as the players struggle to come to terms with Saturday’s 5-0 loss at Stockport.
The home side may take a bit of time to settle and that may be all the encouragement Fleetwood need to open the scoring.
Ronan Coughlan to score any time - 7/2
Ronan Coughlan has been Fleetwood’s star player this season, scoring eight goals across all competitions, and he looks an overpriced 7/2 shot to break the deadlock against Bolton.
The 29-year-old has netted in each of his last two League Two matches and poses an obvious threat to a Bolton defence which looked all over the place at the weekend.
