Blackpool v Peterborough: Tips, Predictions and Odds

Three days after Blackpool won 2-1 at Peterborough in League One action, the sides meet again at Bloomfield Road in the semi-finals of the EFL Trophy.

Blackpool v Peterborough tips and predictions

Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams To Score - 6/5

League One promotion rivals Blackpool and Peterborough meet for the second time in three days with a place in a Wembley final up for grabs.

The Seasiders and Posh lock horns in the EFL Trophy semi-final at Bloomfield Road, a venue where Peterborough won 4-2 earlier in the season.

However, on Saturday it was Blackpool who came out on top, coming from behind at London Road to win 2-1 to reignite their own promotion push and put another dent in Peterborough’s.

The chance to run out at Wembley with a piece of silverware the prize is huge for these clubs and both Blackpool boss Neil Critchley and Posh opposite number Darren Ferguson know the importance of a day out at the national stadium.

But they also know the bigger picture is promotion and both have massive matches on Saturday. Peterborough have an early kick-off at bitter rivals Cambridge before Blackpool take on red-hot Bolton a couple of hours later.

That means both Critchley and Ferguson will try to utilise their squads on Tuesday night within the regulations of the competition, which makes this tie a tough one to call.

What does look on the cards is goals. These are not clubs who are masters in the art of playing for 0-0 draws - Peterborough top the division’s overs/unders table with an average of 3.2 goals per game and both teams are shipping at over a goal a game.

Both teams have scored in each of Posh’s last five matches with a total of 22 goals.

And on the back of a four-game losing streak and without a win in the league in their last five, Posh need to be positive with confidence low. They need a win - whatever the competition.

Both their meetings this season have been full of chances with goals at both ends. Expect something similar when they meet for the third time.

Albie Morgan anytime scorer - 13/2

There were 31 shots between Blackpool and Peterborough when these sides met at the weekend so the potential for goals is obvious.

And both teams have players capable of scoring from all over the pitch.

Among them is Blackpool’s Albie Morgan, who has enjoyed a decent goalscoring start to 2024 from central midfield with four goals since the turn of the year.

A big-match performer, he scored in each of their FA Cup third-round ties against Nottingham Forest and bagged a brace in a 2-0 win over Exeter.

He averages a shot a match, is unerringly accurate from around the edge of the box and his six-goal haul for the campaign is his best.

The former Charlton man is 13/2 to find the net at Bloomfield Road and that looks a fair price.

Hector Kyprianou to be booked - 3/1

Peterborough are the joint-best behaved team in League One this season with 53 yellow cards and one red to their name.

In the top 10 for individual cards, however, is Posh’s midfielder Hector Kyprianou.

The Cypriot found the net at Blackpool on Saturday, a rare goal from a player who does the hard yards rather than take the glory.

That’s six goals for the season, four fewer than his yellow card haul - and that’s not an unusual figure.

Last season he collected 10 cards, the campaign earlier at Leyton Orient he amassed 11. If there was one player you would expect to get carded in a high-stakes contest, Kyprianou would be high on the list.
