Blackburn v Newcastle: Tips, Predictions and Odds

Newcastle were thumped 4-1 by Arsenal in the Premier League at the weekend but they are favourites to bounce back with an FA Cup fifth-round victory away to Blackburn on Tuesday.

The Magpies have not won a domestic trophy since they lifted the FA Cup in 1955 and their patchy league form has increased the pressure on manager Eddie Howe.

Blackburn boss Jon Dahl Tomasson left the club earlier this month and his successor John Eustace is still waiting for his first victory in charge of the Championship side.

A cup win over top-flight Newcastle could kickstart the Eustace era and Blackburn's ties in the EFL Cup and the FA Cup this season have delivered plenty of drama.

Blackburn v Newcastle betting predictions

Over 3.5 goals @ 10/11

Newcastle's four Premier League away fixtures since the turn of the year have produced 20 goals and there should be more entertainment when the Magpies travel to Blackburn on Tuesday.

Howe's men lost 4-2 at Liverpool and 4-1 at Arsenal either side of a 3-1 win at Aston Villa and a 3-2 victory at Nottingham Forest while all three of their home league games in 2024 have also featured over 3.5 goals.

Newcastle lost 3-2 to champions Manchester City before a 4-4 draw with Luton and a 2-2 against Bournemouth at St James' Park so Blackburn should be confident of troubling the visitors' defence.

New Rovers boss Eustace has taken just three points from his first four league matches but both teams have scored in Blackburn's last nine home fixtures and they beat Cambridge 5-2 and Wrexham 4-1 in their last two FA Cup ties.

Their EFL Cup run earlier in the season was also packed with goals as they defeated Walsall 4-3 and Cardiff 5-2 at Ewood Park and hammered League Two Harrogate 8-0 on the road.

Rovers' League Cup run came to an end with a 2-0 defeat away to Chelsea but they can contribute to a high-scoring game in their latest cup clash with Premier League opponents.

Fabian Schar to be anytime goalscorer @ 13/2

Newcastle are likely to shuffle their attacking unit on Tuesday, with wingers Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy among those pushing for starts, but centre-back Fabian Schar also poses a goal threat for the visitors.

The Swiss international fired in a long-range stunner in October's Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain and is an aerial menace from set-piece situations.

Schar has scored three times in his last three away appearances, including a brace in the league win against in-form Villa, and he looks a big price to find the net at Ewood Park.

Sondre Tronstad to be shown a card @ 3/1

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard picked up the only yellow card in Newcastle's 4-1 defeat at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening and another Norwegian midfielder could find himself in the referee's notebook on Tuesday.

Blackburn's Sondre Tronstad can expect a busy 90 minutes against a Newcastle midfield featuring Brazil international Bruno Guimaraes and he is a tempting bet to be shown a card.

Tronstad, signed from Vitesse Arnhem last summer, scored his first goal in English football in the fourth-round win over Wrexham but he has been more prolific when it comes to bookings.

The 28-year-old has been cautioned in five of his last 10 Championship appearances, against Hull, Huddersfield, QPR, Birmingham and Cardiff.

Tronstad will have a major role to play in disrupting the rhythm of the Premier League visitors on Tuesday and he may well add to his card collection in the process.
