Suffering relegation from the Championship on the final day of the previous campaign, Birmingham pressed the reset button in the summer under the ownership of Knighthead Capital.

Gary Rowett had departed at the end of his interim spell and with Tony Mowbray opting against a return to the dugout due to medical reasons, the Blues opted to appoint the unproven Chris Davies as the club's new manager.

Formerly an assistant to Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham and with over 15 years experience working in a variety of coaching roles, Davies' arrival preceded a spectacular squad overhaul, with Birmingham spending a staggering £35million as they brought in 17 new players.

Birmingham broke the League One transfer record twice with the purchases of Willum Willumsson and Christoph Klarer from Go Ahead Eagles and Darmstadt respectively. If many anticipated their lavish spending to simmer on deadline day, they were wrong.

The club pulled off a remarkable deal for Fulham striker Jay Stansfield, who spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at St Andrew's. Joining for a fee that could rise to £20m in the future, Stansfield's capture sent shockwaves around the Football League and was a major statement of intent from Birmingham's owners.

Such unprecedented scales of investment inevitably creates huge expectation, but Davies' charges have lived up to the billing of favourites so far.

Despite a wobble in their opening encounter against Reading, Birmingham have won five consecutive league matches, including victories over promotion contenders Wrexham and Rotherham United.

They've steadily improved with each passing fixture and Davies' methods are being executed, with the Blues ranking first in a number of metrics - most notably for possession.

Anything other than promotion this term will be considered a failure and Birmingham have made an assertive start as they seek an immediate return to the Championship.

The record for most points in League One was set by Wolves in 2013/14, who tallied 103 points under Kenny Jackett and Birmingham have made an identical start with 16 points from their opening six fixtures.

Wolves endured a tough patch through November and December where they only won two of eight matches, but a run of nine consecutive victories from January catapulted them to the summit and the Midlands club only dropped nine points from their final 20 matches.

Given the scale of investment, the immense player quality and impressive squad depth, Birmingham will have their eyes set on exceeding the 100-point barrier.
