Benfica vs Chelsea Prediction

Best Bet: Benfica to qualify @ 11/8

Youngsters Liam Delap and Tyrique George were on the scoresheet for Chelsea in Wednesday's group win over Esperance de Tunis, but the Blues face a streetwise Benfica side in the round of 16.

The Lisbon Eagles made a poor start to the tournament, going 2-0 down to Boca Juniors inside half an hour, but they came back to draw that match and defeated Bayern Munich on matchday three.

Bruno Lage's men have a point to prove after finishing as runners-up to Sporting in the Primeira Liga and the Portuguese Cup and they are an appealing bet to qualify.

James Milton explains:

Chelsea remain an inconsistent side, as demonstrated by their group-stage loss to Flamengo, so Benfica should be full of confidence after pipping Bayern Munich to top spot in Group C.

Benfica vs Chelsea Bet Builder Tip

  • Benfica or draw double chance

  • Moises Caicedo to be booked

  • Vangelis Pavlidis 1+ shot on target

    Pays 8/1

Benfica or draw double chance looks a solid Bet Builder selection as their only defeats in 90 minutes in their last 27 matches came against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League.

Chelsea's combative midfielder Moises Caicedo picked up 11 Premier League bookings in 2024/25 and was also cautioned in the Group D clash with Flamengo.

Vangelis Pavlidis averaged 1.36 shots on target per 90 minutes in the Primeira Liga and his prolific goalscoring campaign included a UEFA Champions League hat-trick against Barca.

James Milton adds:

Benfica were impressive winners over Bayern last time out and they can frustrate Chelsea in 90 minutes. Vangelis Pavlidis poses a major threat to the Blues' goal, while card magnet Moises Caicedo should relish the midfield battle.

Tactics, Form and Team News

Former Wolves boss Lage has left-back Alvaro Carreras and striker Andrea Belotti available again after suspension.

Carreras, strongly linked with a summer transfer to Real Madrid, should come back into the starting line-up at the expense of Sweden international Samuel Dahl.

Benfica made slow starts to their first two matches at the Club World Cup. They battled back from 2-0 down to draw with Boca Juniors and needed an Angel Di Maria penalty in the eighth minute of first-half injury-time to break through against minnows Auckland City.

They racked up 18 shots, eight of them on target, in the first half against Auckland, going on to win 6-0 after a long delay due to lightning.

Expected Benfica line-up (4-2-3-1): Trubin; Aursnes, Silva, Otamendi, Carreras; Barreiro, Kokcu; Di Maria, Prestianni, Akturkoglu; Pavlidis.

Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson remains suspended after his red card in the defeat to Flamengo.

Jackson's ban has opened the door for new signing Delap, who scored his first goal for the Blues against Esperance de Tunis on matchday three.

The former Ipswich forward should lead the line again and Maresca is likely to recall first-team regulars Caicedo, Cole Palmer, Marc Cucurella and Levi Colwill, who were rested for the win over Esperance.

Expected Chelsea line-up (4-2-3-1): Sanchez; James, Chalobah, Colwill, Cucurella; Caicedo, Fernandez; Neto, Palmer, Madueke; Delap.
