Bayer Leverkusen v Wolfsburg: Predictions, Tips and Odds

Bayer Leverkusen have a chance to finally end their Bundesliga title hoodoo this season and are unlikely to make any mistakes against visitors Wolfsburg on Sunday.

Leverkusen have famously never claimed the German title, but Die Werkself are long odds-on shots to finally change that this season and will be hoping to cruise to the finish line over the final weeks of the campaign.

The hosts have been in red-hot form in the league. However, they will have to quickly recover from a midweek Europa League trip to Baku, Azerbaijan, which saw them fall two goals behind to Qarabag before second-half goals from Florian Wirtz and Patrik Schick salvaged a 2-2 first-leg draw.

Wolfsburg, meanwhile, are marooned in mid-table and are winless in nine, so a meeting with the best team in the Bundesliga could prove a chastening experience for Niko Kovac's visitors.

Bayer Leverkusen to win & over 3.5 goals - 7/4

Leverkusen have been irresistible at times in the Bundesliga this season, perhaps best illustrated by their 3-0 home win over main title rivals Bayern Munich last month and Die Werkself are offering few indications that a slip is coming.

Despite persistent rumours about his future, Alonso appears to be focused on the task at hand and it would come as a huge surprise were 1/3 shots Leverkusen to falter at home to the Wolves.

The hosts have won nine of their last 10 Bundesliga matches, only dropping points against Borussia Monchengladbach at their BayArena home in January.

They've since bounced back on their own patch with that resounding win over Bayern and an ill-tempered 2-1 triumph over Mainz.

Jeremie Frimpong is suspended for this contest and striker Victor Boniface is a long-term absentee, but Alonso will be hopeful that the rest of his squad are fit enough to emulate their 4-0 October win over Union Berlin, which came just three days after a group-stage meeting with Qarabag in Baku.

The best route to profit could be to take Alonso's men to edge a high-scoring contest with Leverkusen to win and over 3.5 match goals making plenty of appeal.

The hosts have scored 34 goals in 12 games at the BayArena this season and, while they've been a tough nut to crack defensively, they play host to a Wolfsburg team who have at least scored in four of their last five away matches and have struck twice in each of their last two outings.

Alex Grimaldo to score at any time - 3/1

Schick has been the focal point of Leverkusen's attack in the absence of Boniface, but the Czech has failed to net in any of his last five Bundesliga outings and others catch the eye at more attractive odds in the goalscorer markets.

Wirtz, who joined Schick on the scoresheet in Azerbaijan on Thursday, is an obvious threat, but so too is Spanish full-back Alex Grimaldo, who has scored more Bundesliga goals for Leverkusen this term than anyone apart from Boniface.

The 28-year-old has struck nine times in 24 league appearances, including against Wolfsburg in the reverse fixture in October, while he's also found the net twice in Europe.

Grimaldo, seemingly relishing playing for his compatriot Alonso, could be tasked with an even more attacking role in Frimpong's absence and it would come as no surprise were he to find the net.

Maximilian Arnold to be booked - 12/5

Eight yellow cards were dished out when these teams met at the Volkswagen Arena in October and there looks to be value in taking Wolfsburg's Maximilian Arnold to fall foul of referee Daniel Siebert's whistle.

Tough-tackling midfielder Arnold has a terrible disciplinary record, being booked eight times in 20 appearances this season including in three of Wolfsburg's last four matches.

He could struggle to rein himself in against a Leverkusen team who will see the majority of the ball.

Referee Siebert is no stranger to awarding cards, handing out 48 bookings from 11 matches. Expect him to have Arnold in his sights from the off.
