Euros: Austria news, fixtures, manager, key players, Euros record

Austria will be making just their fourth appearance at the Euros when they head to Germany for this summer's tournament.

Das Team finished behind only Belgium in qualifying Group F, and reaching the quarter-finals, which they have never done before, is a realistic goal.

Austria manager

Ralf Rangnick

Ralf Rangnick, credited with developing the Gegenpressing tactic, took charge of Austria in June 2022 and promised to bring entertaining football back for the fans.

After a difficult Nations League campaign that produced just one victory from six matches, the 65-year-old then guided Das Team to second place in qualifying for the European Championship, winning six, drawing one and losing one.

Under Rangnick's guidance, there looks to be a strong chance Austria can improve on their best Euros finish, a last-16 exit in 2020.

Austria key players

Michael Gregoritsch

Freiburg striker Michael Gregoritsch is expected to lead the line for Austria and he has impressed in international football.

The 30-year-old has 15 goals from 55 caps, and while that is not the most prolific record, it is still a solid return, and he has grown in confidence since Rangnick's arrival.

Christoph Baumgartner

Midfield is an area where Austria have quite a few options to choose from, but one player who will be one of the first names on the team sheet is Christoph Baumgartner, who has 36 caps at the age of 24.

The RB Leipzig ace brings real control and composure to the side and he also adds a goal threat to the team, having scored in each of his last three international appearances.

Kevin Danso

Capped 18 times, centre-back Kevin Danso's stock has risen rapidly over the last couple of seasons and he earned rave reviews for helping Lens finish second in the 2022/23 campaign.

Standing at 6ft 3in, the 25-year-old provides an aerial threat at both ends, possesses great speed and athleticism, and will have greater responsibility given Alaba's expected absence.

Austria one to watch

Leopold Querfeld

Rangnick could have some big decisions to make on who his starting centre-backs will be and one player in the running is Leopold Querfeld, who earned his first cap for his country in the March international break.

Just 20 years of age, the Rapid Wien ace's reputation has been growing over the past couple of seasons, and at 6ft 3in, he brings a big aerial threat to the side.

This is perhaps sooner than he anticipated to be in Austria's senior squad, but he has bags of potential and he can show that on one of the biggest stages of them all.

Austria's Euro 2024 prospects

With just eight teams getting knocked out in the group stage, Austria should have enough to reach the last 16.

If they can grab second spot in Group D, the chances of reaching the quarter-final would increase as they would take on the runners-up of Group E, which has Belgium, Slovakia, Ukraine and Romania in.

Realistically, Austria should qualify from their pool, and are priced at 10/11 to do so, while a run to the quarters at 5/2 may be the best they can achieve.
