Austria v France Prediction, Tips and Odds: Underdogs can play their part

France were firmly amongst the pre-tournament favourites for this summer's Euros and Les Bleus enter the fray on Monday evening by facing Austria in Dusseldorf.

Didier Deschamps will know that his side cannot afford a slow start in a group that houses them alongside the Netherlands and Poland, but the French boss will be aware that Austria under Ralf Rangnick are going to be no pushovers.

France are firm favourites at 8/15 to get the win, with the draw priced at 7/2 and a famous Austrian win trading at 19/4.

Austria v France betting tips and predictions

France to win and both teams to score - 11/5

Anybody looking on from a neutral standpoint could only have been enthused by the opening knockings of Euro 2024.

The first four games all boasted at least three goals, with seven of the first eight nations into battle finding the net – Croatia the exception despite amassing 16 efforts at goal during their loss to Spain.

With that in mind, both teams are expected to find the net in Dusseldorf but, ultimately, the French can pick up the win.

Deschamps had to deal with a viral bug in his squad last week but all indications suggest France have overcome that.

After topping the 'group of death' at Euro 2020, France were caught stone cold by Switzerland in the last-16, conceding two late goals in a 3-3 draw before exiting on penalties.

The same shootout fate befell them in Qatar in 2022, this time in the World Cup final itself. Les Bleus have not won the Euros since 2000, with their 2016 final defeat their only venture past the quarter-finals in five attempts since.

They are certainly expected to go a long way in this edition and an opening win will provide them a good platform to do it.

Austria are thriving under Rangnick. They won six of eight in qualifying, their only loss being to group winners Belgium via a 3-2 scoreline in Vienna.

Das Team have lost just one of their last 16 games, while they've scored in 17 consecutive games, including friendly wins over Italy and Germany.

Prior to the warm-up games against Luxembourg and Canada, the French had failed to keep a clean sheet in six of seven games, the exception being a 14-0 stroll against Gibraltar.

There's reason for Austrian optimism going to Dusseldorf and they should find the net, but ultimately in a losing cause. Since June 2018, France have played 62 competitive games, with 29 percent of those resulting in victories with both teams scoring. That percentage can rise in Dusseldorf.

Kylian Mbappe to score two or more goals - 9/2

Few players will be coming into the tournament in a better place mentally than Kylian Mbappe after he secured his long-awaited move to Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain.

The 25-year-old was clearly ready to leave PSG but still contributed 44 goals in the season just gone. After his World Cup final heroics, when he became the first man since Geoff Hurst to grace the final with a hat-trick, Mbappe has scored 10 goals in 11 games for France since the start of 2023.

He is a player in his prime right now, arguably the most lethal attacker in world football as the era of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo draws near an end.

When he's on form, Mbappe is almost unstoppable. He didn't find the net at all during Euro 2020 three summers ago, an aberration really, but was top scorer at the 2022 World Cup with eight.

This will be his 80th cap for France and a brace would take him to within one of 50 goals. Mbappe can lay down a marker against Austria.

Marcel Sabitzer Over 0.5 shot on target - 5/4

The Austrian frontline may be led by Michael Gregoritsch of Freiburg, with veteran Marko Arnautovic a possible impact sub.

Rangnick's preferred 4-2-3-1 will see his side attempting to get runners involved from deep and amongst those will be Marcel Sabitzer of Borussia Dortmund.

The 30-year-old has scored 17 times for Austria in 78 caps and is the designated penalty taker.

In the Bundesliga season, he had 49 shots in 25 appearances. He should be able to get some shots off in Dusseldorf and looks a fair price at 5/4 to hit the target with one.
