Atletico Madrid v Barcelona: Prediction, Tips and Odds

After securing their places in the quarter-finals of the Champions League during the week, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona turn their attention back to domestic matters ahead of their La Liga clash at Civitas Metropolitano on Sunday.

Atleti booked their place in the last eight of Europe's premier club competition in dramatic style, overcoming a 1-0 deficit from the first leg of their round of 16 tie with Inter Milan to eventually progress via a penalty shootout.

Barca's European qualification was a little more straightforward, as they beat Napoli 3-1 in the second leg of their last-16 tie, sealing a 4-2 aggregate success and setting up a quarter-final showdown with Paris Saint-Germain.

Borussia Dortmund will be the opponents for Atleti in the last eight and if both Spanish clubs come through their respective ties, then they will face off in the semi-finals.

However, before any talk of a European battle can commence, these two teams must first lock horns domestically and there is plenty at stake for both heading into Sunday's contest in the Spanish capital.

Atletico Madrid v Barcelona betting tips and predictions

Draw - 13/5

This is a match that will pit an Atleti side with the best home form in La Liga this season against a Barca team who hold the division's only unbeaten record on their travels.

To say Atleti have barely put a foot wrong on home turf would be something of an understatement, as they have won 13 of their 14 La Liga matches at Civitas Metropolitano this season, drawing the other against Getafe in December.

Real Madrid, Valencia and Real Betis are among the teams that have left Atleti's home ground empty-handed and the midweek success over Inter will have only boosted the confidence of Diego Simeone's side on their own patch.

The win over Inter should also help Simeone and his troops put last weekend's shock 2-0 defeat at struggling Cadiz behind them, a result that means Atleti head into this gameweek still sitting fourth in the standings, but only two points clear of Athletic Bilbao, who could have leapfrogged them in the table by the time Sunday's match kicks off.

Barca sit six points above Atleti in third and they are on an impressive nine-match unbeaten run across all competitions, a sequence that has even tentatively brought them back into the title picture.

Xavi's side head into the weekend sitting a point behind second-placed Girona and eight off league leaders Real Madrid and they are 20/1 to overturn that deficit and defend their title.

An impressive away record is one of the reasons Barca have been improving, as they are unbeaten in 13 away matches in La Liga this season, although six of those have ended all-square.

The Blaugrana also boast a strong recent record against Atleti, winning the last four meetings between the two sides, including a 1-0 success in the reverse meeting in Catalonia back in December.

Barca also won last season's clash at Civitas Metropolitano, but given Atleti's home heroics this term, it is hard to see the host's losing on Sunday, meaning the draw at 13/5 offers plenty of appeal.

Under 2.5 goals - 6/5

Those searching for a Sunday night goalfest may need to look elsewhere if recent meetings between these two sides are anything to go by, as six of the last seven clashes have yielded under 2.5 goals.

When Atleti are the home team - as they are this weekend - that statistic becomes even more prominent, as their last six meetings with Barca at Civitas Metropolitano have seen a maximum of two goals scored.

Atleti may have become a more expansive side this season, but they have failed to score in five of their last nine matches across all competitions and may struggle to net more than once against a Barca defence who have kept three La Liga clean sheets on the bounce.

Barca have drawn their last two away fixtures, sharing the spoils in a goalless La Liga draw with Bilbao off the back of a 1-1 at Napoli in the Champions League - a similar low-scoring stalemate could be on the cards on Sunday.

Over 5.5 cards in the match - 8/11

Atletico Madrid v Barcelona is one of the biggest games on La Liga's calendar and recent meetings between the pair have been spicy to say the least.

December's showdown in Catalonia saw nine yellow cards brandished and there were 12 handed out when they locked horns at the Camp Nou in April 2023.

The most recent meeting at Civitas Metropolitano saw the referee go to his pocket seven times, two of which were red cards for Stefan Savic and Ferran Torres.

Therefore it would seem safe to say that this weekend's official, Jose Maria Sanchez Martinez, will be in for a busy evening.
