Two of Spain's finest will clash in the Spanish Super Cup semi-finals on Wednesday, when Athletic Bilbao take on Barcelona.

Ernesto Valverde’s side are just two points behind the Catalan club in La Liga and have shown their predisposition to cup competitions recently, winning the Copa del Rey last season.

The two teams will battle it out in the heat of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for a spot in the final.

Off the field issues have overshadowed Barcelona in recent years and they have reared their head again this season, with question marks over whether or not the club can register Dani Olmo and Pau Victor in time to feature in this Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Athletic Bilbao.

The issues surrounding the club may be at least partly to blame for Barca’s recent dip in form, they have won just one of their last seven league games, losing four of those.

Hansi Flick’s side are now five points adrift in the La Liga title race as a result and need to hope this cup competition can spring them back into life.

They take on Bilbao, who have made it into this competition as a result of winning the Copa del Rey last season. The Lions beat Barcelona to win the Spanish Super Cup in 2015 and have been in rock-solid form recently.

Despite the selection constraints placed on the squad they consistently punch above their weight and have done so again this term, they are unbeaten in their last 15 games in all competitions and are just two points adrift of Barcelona in the Spanish top flight.

The Basque team are also second in the UEFA Europa League table after winning five and drawing one of their six games in that competition and pose a real threat to an underperforming Barcelona team.

Lamine Yamal is a big injury doubt for Barcelona and they could struggle to fire without their young talisman.

These two teams met three times in 2024, with a win apiece and a draw, and the value in this clash could come in siding with Bilbao to avoid defeat.

Inaki Williams to score at any time - 10/3

The Williams brothers have been crucial to Bilbao’s success in recent seasons and despite the pair being linked with moves away from the club, they have stayed and continued to star.

With doubts about the fitness of Oihan Sancet, who has been a reliable source of goals for Valverde’s side this season, fellow joint-top scorer Inaki Williams may step up.

The 30-year-old has eight goals in all competitions and is a big contender to add to that tally against a Barcelona team who have looked shaky at the back recently.

Yuri Berchiche to be shown a card - 15/8

Veteran Yuri Berchiche has been booked five times in all competitions this season and looks a prime candidate for another when his Bilbao side take on Barcelona.

The left-back is almost 35-years-old and while he has been a top player for this team, he is not getting any younger and will be tested by Barca’s tricky wingers.

Yamal may not be fit to line up against him but even if he doesn’t, expect Raphinha to take his place and Berchiche could be in for a long night.
