Athletic Bilbao v Atletico Madrid: Tips, Predictions and Odds

Athletic Bilbao hold the aces in this two-legged Copa del Rey semi-final after their 1-0 success away at Atletico Madrid earlier this month and many will be expecting them to complete the job in hand at San Mames.

Alex Berenguer’s first-half penalty is all that separated the teams in the opening leg at the Metropolitano Stadium but, given Athletic Bilbao’s formidability at home, that could turn out to be a decisive goal.

Diego Simeone’s side will still believe they have the quality required to complete the dramatic turnaround but they are 10/3 to qualify with Athletic Bilbao firmly in control of the tie and 1/5 to make the final.

A draw will be enough to see Ernesto Valverde’s men advance and awaiting them in the final would be Mallorca, who stunned Real Sociedad in a thrilling penalty shootout success.

Athletic Bilbao are 7/5 to record their third win over Atletico this season, with a draw available at 11/5 and an away win also a 11/5 chance.

Athletic Bilbao to win - 7/5

Athletic Bilbao don’t need to win to progress to the final of the Copa del Rey after their gritty 1-0 victory in Madrid three weeks ago, but they still look worth backing to record another 90-minute victory over Simeone’s side.

The home team should be full of confidence after consistently proving their ability on their own patch and they have won seven La Liga games in a row at San Mames Barria.

In fact, Athletic Bilbao are unbeaten in 14 home matches in all competitions, a run stemming all the way back to their 2-0 loss to Real Madrid in their opening home fixture of their campaign on 12th August.

That rich vein of form on home turf includes a 2-0 league success over Atletico just before Christmas, a victory that could have been even more emphatic had Oihan Sancet not squandered a first-half penalty.

The Basque Country side also defeated Barcelona 4-2 on aggregate at home in the quarter-final, a win that should fill them with the belief to finish Atletico off.

And while the Lions are formidable opponents at home, Atletico Madrid have a bit to prove on their travels having won only one of their last eight away league games.

Atletico were frustrated in a 2-2 draw away at rock-bottom Almeria in their latest league fixture on Saturday, which is one of only nine points collected for La Liga’s basement boys.

That is a worrying result for Simeone’s men, especially when you consider that they have won only one of their last six games in all competitions, not only failing to score in the first leg against Athletic Bilbao but also firing blanks at Sevilla in La Liga and at Inter in the Champions League.

So Athletic Bilbao, having kept clean sheets in four of their last six matches, should defend resolutely and are fancied to follow up their first-leg success with another win.

Gorka Guruzeta to score at any time - 21/10

Gorka Guruzeta has really come of age for Athletic Bilbao this season, netting 11 goals in 27 appearances in all competitions, and he could bolster that tally at home to Atletico.

Guruzeta spearheads Bilbao’s attack and nine of his 11 goals this season have come at home, including when he opened the scoring in that impressive 2-0 win over Atletico in December.

The 27-year-old also grabbed the first goal of the game when the Lions defeated Barcelona 4-2 in the quarter-final of the Copa del Rey and there may be value in him finding the net again at 21/10.

Dani Vivian to be shown a card - 11/5

Given what is at stake and how delicately-poised this semi-final is, cards look a given between two fiery sides.

At some point, Bilbao are going to come under some pressure and tempers could flare, making defender Dani Vivian a likely card candidate at 11/5.

Vivan was cautioned in the first leg, which means has now collected seven bookings in 29 appearances this season, and that ill-discipline could be tested by an Atletico side that are brimming with attacking talent.
