Aston Villa v Wolves: Tips, Predictions and Odds

Wolves have had two weeks to recover from FA Cup humiliation at the hands of one Midlands rival, Coventry, but will expect no sympathy in another derby showdown at Villa Park.

Aston Villa v Wolves betting tips and predictions

Wolves to win either half @ 13/8

A big Midlands derby between Aston Villa and Wolves is always a feisty affair but there is more riding on this than usual.

Villa, almost pinching themselves at being in the fourth and final Champions League place, cannot afford slip-ups with the likes of Tottenham and Manchester United hot on their heels.

And Wolves, strongly fancied for relegation at the start of the season, are also firmly in the hunt for a European return.

That’s the backdrop to a game which is always played to high stakes anyway and which promises to be tense, fractious and perhaps not the foregone conclusion the prices imply.

Unai Emery’s in-form side are around the 3/5 mark which considering they have won 10 of their 14 matches at Villa Park seems to make sense.

But they dropped five points in two big games prior to the international break, when they were thumped 4-0 at home by Tottenham and held to a 1-1 draw at West Ham.

John McGinn, a key workhorse in the Villa midfield, is suspended and they are up against a Wolves side who aren’t that easy to predict.

Clearly the 3-2 FA Cup loss against Coventry - and the manner of it after leading 2-1 going into added time - will have stung at Molineux.

But in the last couple of months they have won at Chelsea and Tottenham and also another local rival, West Brom, in the FA Cup.

They have done the double over Spurs and Chelsea, beaten Manchester City this season and drew 1-1 against Villa at Molineux.

They still look lighter than most in terms of goals so getting nine-goal Matheus Cunha back from injury hasn’t come soon enough for Gary O’Neil.

Ollie Watkins didn’t exactly cover himself in glory on international duty and Wolves will be confident they can keep Villa’s top scorer under wraps.

Wolves can trouble the hosts and are more than capable of winning a half at the very least.

Nelson Semedo to be booked @ 12/5

There were six yellow cards and a red when these rivals met at Molineux in September, a match which ended 1-1 and saw Wolves’ midfielder Mario Lemina sent off.

Lemina is 13/8 to be booked in the return and with nine yellows to his name in the league he’s clearly a contender to be cautioned by Paul Tierney.

But there are plenty of Lemina’s team-mates - and Villa players as well - who are better value than the Gabon enforcer to have their names taken.

Step forward right-back Nelson Semedo, who has eight yellows to his name in the Premier League, plus one in the FA Cup.

The Portuguese defender was also booked against Villa at Molineux and in the same fixture in May, as well. That was one of 11 yellows he picked up in 2022/23 which makes the 12/5 about him crossing a line in what is sure to be a tempestuous affair, look tempting.

Aston Villa Under 6.5 Corners @ 5/6

Villa’s home games average under 10 corners a time and Wolves’ away game average under 10 corners a time also, which suggests there might not be an abundance of corners at Villa Park.

And the fewer the corners the less likely it is that Villa will secure the seven they are effectively in for on the Team Corners market.

Villa average under six corners per home match which adds weight to the bet.
