Aston Villa v West Ham United: Prediction, Tips and Odds

West Ham United start life under new manager Graham Potter with an FA Cup third-round trip to Aston Villa on Friday.

Aston VIlla to win & over 2.5 goals - 11/8

The last FA Cup meeting between Aston Villa and West Ham United came in January 1980, when the Hammers won 1-0 on their way to lifting the trophy.

A repeat of that triumph looks unlikely given West Ham's performances this season, especially at the end of a week in which they changed manager.

Graham Potter could be a shrewd appointment to succeed Julen Lopetegui in the long term but the former Brighton and Chelsea boss was only unveiled on Thursday.

He will be going head-to-head with Villa manager Unai Emery less than 48 hours later and that may not be long enough to solve West Ham's defensive problems.

Both teams are missing key attacking players as Villa striker Jhon Duran is suspended and Hammers forwards Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio are sidelined.

However, there is still plenty of creative talent on display and backing Villa to win and over 2.5 goals looks a solid bet.

There have been over 2.5 goals in eight of Villa's last nine games in all competitions, including their Premier League home wins over Brentford, Manchester City and Leicester City.

They have lost nine of their last 11 FA Cup ties – a shocking record for a club of their stature – but should progress against West Ham, who were thumped 5-0 by Liverpool and 4-1 by struggling champions City in their last two matches under Lopetegui.

Morgan Rogers to be first goalscorer - 6/1

Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers was suspended for the 2-1 home win over Leicester last time out but he could come back with a bang in Friday's FA Cup tie.

Rogers has been outstanding for Villa this term and he was an ever-present in the Premier League before a fifth yellow card triggered a one-match ban.

With Duran suspended, England international Ollie Watkins should lead the line for the hosts but the dynamic Rogers looks the most appealing first-goalscorer option.

He has hit a rich vein of form in the league, scoring six times in his last 14 appearances and racking up four shots in last month's home win over Manchester City.

Rogers, who started 2024 playing in the Championship for Middlesbrough, averages two shots per game in the UEFA Champions League and should get chances against leaky visitors West Ham.

Matty Cash to be booked - 4/1

Aston Villa right-back Matty Cash looks a prime candidate to be booked against West Ham when the claret-and-blue rivals collide in the FA Cup third round.

The Poland international has been employed in a more attacking position at times during his Villa career but he should revert to his usual full-back role on Friday.

Cash can expect a testing night against lively Hammers winger Crysencio Summerville and he has been cautioned five times in 992 minutes of Premier League football this term.

Four of those yellow cards have come in his last six league outings and he is an eye-catching price to upset referee Tim Robinson at Villa Park.
