Aston Villa v Tottenham: Predictions, Tips and Odds

The coveted fourth place in the Premier League looks to be a battle between Aston Villa and Tottenham this season, so Sunday's clash at Villa Park could see one club taking a huge step towards qualifying for the Champions League.

However, an entertaining but close battle between the teams is likely and there may not be much to separate them.

Aston Villa v Tottenham Predictions and Betting Tips

Draw - 3/1

With a six-point gap to third-placed Arsenal above Aston Villa and sixth-placed Manchester United lying six points below Tottenham, these teams have plenty of room in which to squabble over who gets fourth place.

Villa are currently five points ahead having played one game more after winning their last three league games, although they left it very late before Lucas Digne's decisive goal in last weekend's 3-2 win at Luton.

Unai Emery's side have lost just twice in their 13 home Premier League matches this season, with Newcastle and Manchester United the only visiting teams to leave Villa Park with three points.

Both of those are top-eight teams like Tottenham, though, so the Villa boss will be wary of the threat posed by Spurs.

Ange Postecoglou's team can throw in the odd poor performance, such as the recent 2-1 home defeat by Wolves, but that was their only defeat in their last seven league games.

Spurs' only win over a top-four team this season was their 2-1 victory over nine-man Liverpool in September, but they have posted some strong results against the elite teams, drawing 2-2 at Arsenal and 3-3 at Manchester City.

The visitors also have an edge in terms of freshness having been out of action since last Saturday's 3-1 home win over Crystal Palace, while Villa had to undertake a midweek trip to play Ajax in the Europa Conference League on Thursday night and fielded a fairly strong line-up in a hard-fought goalless draw.

That difference in schedules helps to offset Villa's home advantage and backing the draw at 3/1 looks a far better value option than trusting either of these teams to win at much shorter odds.

2-2 correct score - 11/1

Aston Villa won the teams' first meeting this season 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in November but that result was arguably tough on the home team, who had 62 per-cent possession and 17 shots to Villa's 13 (with eight on target compared to five) and also won the corners battle 9-3.

Even switching the venue to the Midlands doesn't suggest that anything other than another tight tussle between the sides is likely and an interest on a 2-2 correct-score appeals.

Four of Tottenham's 26 Premier League games this season have finished 2-2 and all four of those fixtures, against Brentford, Arsenal, Manchester United and Everton, were on the road.

The matches at Old Trafford and Goodison Park were in fact Spurs' last two league away games and a hat-trick of 2-2s on the road would not be a huge surprise.

Both teams have scored in Tottenham's last nine league games and the same applies to eight of Villa's last ten Premier League outings.

With Villa averaging 2.69 goals per home league game and Tottenham scoring 2.17 per game on the road, a 2-2 draw looks even more plausible.

Heung-Min Son anytime goalscorer - 6/4

Heung-Min Son shared the Premier League's Golden Boot award with Mohamed Salah when scoring 23 times in the 2021-22 season and has already exceeded his 2022-23 tally of 10 goals by scoring 13 times in 23 league outings for Spurs this season.

If there are going to be plenty of goals in this contest, as seems likely, the South Korean star is highly likely to be involved.

His goal in last Saturday's 3-1 home win over Crystal Palace was his first in the league since he scored against Bournemouth on New Year's Eve, but he was still finding the net during the gap between those goals as he grabbed three goals in six appearances for his national side at the Asian Cup.

Having already scored against Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City this season, Son has a chance to complete a full set of goals against the teams above Tottenham in the table.
