Aston Villa v Tottenham Hotspur: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Tottenham were unable to hold onto their 1-0 lead in the EFL Cup semi-final second leg away at Liverpool on Thursday, eventually succumbing to a 4-0 defeat, and the quick turn around for an FA Cup fourth-round tie at Aston Villa is far from ideal.

Spurs defended resolutely until Cody Gakpo levelled the tie on 34 minutes and from then on they caved, conceding three second half goals in what was ultimately a one-sided affair.

With Tottenham 14th in the Premier League table following six defeats in their last eight games, pressure remains on Ange Postecoglou but injuries are making things difficult for the Australian manager.

Unlike Spurs, Aston Villa have had a week to reflect on their 2-0 defeat at Wolves last Saturday and they will be desperate to hit back in this cup clash.

Unai Emery’s side came from behind to win 2-1 at home to West Ham in the previous round and they will be full of confidence that they can down Spurs, who have lost three of the last five meetings between the sides.

Aston Villa v Tottenham Hotspur betting tips and predictions

Aston Villa to win - 7/10

Tottenham put up little resistance in Thursday’s 4-0 defeat at Liverpool in the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final tie, a contest in which they lost the shot count 26-5 and failed to register a shot on target.

That was a seventh defeat in Tottenham’s last 13 games and they are operating way below a team that are currently competing in the Europa League.

Injuries are not helping matters and, with Spurs severely depleted both in attack and defence, this looks like a gilt-edged opportunity for Aston Villa to utilise home advantage.

Tottenham needed extra-time to see off National League outfit Tamworth in the previous round and they have lost six of their last nine away games in the Premier League.

Spurs did beat Villa 4-1 at home in the league in November but six of the 11 players that started that game look set to be sidelined, including all three goalscorers Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson and James Maddison.

Villa have had eight days to ponder on last weekend’s 2-0 defeat at Wolves and an improved display should be expected at Villa Park, where they have lost only one of their last 17 competitive matches.

Emery’s side had an excellent January transfer window and the recruiting of Marcos Rashford, Marco Asensio, Donyell Malen, Axel Disasi and Andres Garcia only adds competition to what was already an extremely strong squad.

Dejan Kulusevski to have a shot on target - 11/10

Tottenham’s injury crisis means there is even greater importance on the shoulders of Dejan Kulusevski and the Swedish star looks a big price to have a shot on target at 11/10.

Kulusevski has been a standout performer for Spurs this season and six goals and four assists in 24 appearances goes some way to highlighting his capabilities.

Kulusevski has had 14 shots on target in 24 league appearances and he should be desperate to shine as Spurs bid to respond to their midweek collapse.

Morgan Rogers to be shown a card - 4/1

With six goals and four assists in 23 appearances this season, Morgan Rogers is a key component in Aston Villa’s attack, but he has also been picking up plenty of cards too.

The attack-minded midfielder has collected six yellow cards in his last eight appearances, which includes in the last round of the FA Cup against West Ham.
