Aston Villa v Nottingham Forest: Tips, Predictions and Odds

Aston Villa have a Premier League top-four finish in their sights and at their fortress Villa Park they will be expected to bolster their Champions League qualification aspirations against a relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest.

The Villans are not proving as formidable as they were earlier on in the campaign and back-to-back home league defeats to Newcastle and Manchester United means the pressure is on to respond with success over Forest.

However, Unai Emery’s side had triumphed in nine of their opening ten home league games and they are back in winning form after an Ollie Watkins brace inspired them to a 2-1 victory at Fulham last weekend.

Forest are also in high spirits after last Saturday's 2-0 success at home to West Ham but they have had less to cheer about on their travels, having suffered defeat in seven of their 12 away games.

That victory over the Hammers leaves the Tricky Trees four points above the relegation zone but, with some tough fixtures coming up, there is still plenty of work to be done.

Aston Villa v Nottingham Forest tips and predictions

Aston Villa to win & both teams to score - 15/8

Villa have won nine of their 12 home league games this season and are fancied to hit back following recent setbacks against Newcastle and Manchester United at Villa Park.

Emery’s men are no longer being talked up as potential title candidates after their dip in form but they are still in pole position to finish fourth, although can’t afford too many more misses with Tottenham and United hot on their tails.

Villa’s latest win at Craven Cottage should have restored some confidence and it is easy to forget that they have claimed the scalps of Arsenal and Manchester City on their own patch this term.

The Villans have also battered Brighton 6-1 and readily brushed aside West Ham 4-1 at Villa Park this season, suggesting that with help from Watkins and Leon Bailey that they may have too much firepower for Forest.

That said, defensive injuries are creeping in and that has had an impact on their results with only two clean sheets in their last nine league matches.

Villa have seen both teams score in nine of their last 11 home league games and that should offer hope to an improving Forest side that have looked especially dangerous since Taiwo Awoniyi’s return from injury.

The Tricky Trees have failed to score in only one of their last ten league fixtures - both teams have scored in eight of those outings - and they should be able to get on the scoresheet.

However, Forest have won only twice in 12 away league games this season and their efforts may simply be in vain.

John McGinn to be shown a card - 9/4

Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn is one player that wears his heart on his sleeve and that passion is something that can often get him into trouble with the referee.

With Boubacar Kamara sidelined, there is extra reliance on McGinn and Douglas Luiz in Villa’s midfield and it is sure to be a feisty encounter.

McGinn was booked in Villa’s latest fixture at Fulham, which was his seventh yellow card from 25 Premier League appearances, and the Scottish international has committed a total of 32 fouls in the top-flight this season.

Ollie Watkins to have over 1.5 shots on target - 5/6

Watkins has scored 13 goals and grabbed ten assists in 25 Premier League appearances for Villa this season to stake his claim for a place in England’s squad at Euro 2024.

His involvement is critical for the Villans and, having had 76 shots in the Premier League this term, he looks a good bet to have at least two shots on target against Forest.

Watkins has had 33 shots on target in total and, having bagged a brace away at Fulham last season, he can force at least two saves from the Forest shot-stopper at 5/6.

The 28-year-old has had at least two shots on target in each of his last four league matches, which bodes well for the visit of Forest.
