Aston Villa v Brighton: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Aston Villa and Brighton have both been troubled by inconsistency and could cancel each other out on Monday.

The Villans have struggled to balance the Premier League with their Champions League exploits and looked tired in Thursday's 3-0 defeat at Newcastle.

That was their second defeat in three, but the middle fixture in that trio was a 2-1 home win over Manchester City and they are generally excellent at Villa Park.

Brighton had to settle for a 0-0 home draw against Brentford on Friday and Fabian Hurzeler's side are now without a win in six.

Their European hopes appear to be in flux but a win in the West Midlands would lift them above Villa, who currently have two points more than them in the standings.

However, with fatigue impacting the Villa squad and Brighton looking out of form, these two could cancel each other out.

Aston Villa v Brighton betting tips and predictions

Draw - 14/5

Villa are undefeated in five at home, beating Brentford 3-1, Southampton 1-0 and Manchester City 2-1, while also drawing 0-0 against Juventus in the UEFA Champions League.

However, the first of those matches, a 2-2 with Crystal Palace, is most similar to Monday's game.

Another tie feels likely with Brighton winless in six, with four being draws and as of writing, their total of eight draws is a joint-league high.

Hurzeler's side have been frustrating to watch, having the best of last Saturday's 1-1 at West Ham, where they won the shot count 12-11, and it was more of the same against Brentford where they had 24 efforts but only landed seven on target.

The German coach says his team are not getting what they deserve from games and this might be another case of them dominating the ball but not winning.

Villa's best play comes on the counter-attack and in a clash of styles, this duo could cancel each other out.

Ollie Watkins anytime goalscorer - 5/4

After an almost heroic summer with England, Ollie Watkins has struggled to reproduce the same level of form and looks to have lost his place to Jhon Duran.

However, the Colombian's three-game ban for his dismissal at Newcastle gives Watkins a chance to regain his place in the team and, he has a decent record against the Seagulls, netting six times in seven league appearances.

The 28-year-old will be determined to shine as he aims to end his run of five without scoring.

That number is a misnomer in that he has still been in good form as far as assists are concerned and Emery has a nice mix of forwards, with Duran almost all about the goals but Watkins providing for his colleagues.

The Devonian will want to prove he can return to the form that saw him score 19 league goals last season and look for him to strike.

Joao Pedro to be booked - 4/1

Joao Pedro personified Brighton's frustration against Brentford, escaping sanction for what looked like an elbow aimed at Bees' midfielder Yehor Yarmolyuk.

The Ukrainian was carded for pulling his opponent back but Joao Pedro still appeared to target a loose limb at Yarmolyuk and it was fortunate for both players that he missed.

After a bright start to the campaign in which he belied injuries to net four times in his first six matches, the 23-year-old has failed to score in his last six and the situation appears to be getting to him.

Villa midfielder Boubacar Kamara is likely to do a similar job to Yarmolyuk in terms of screening his defence and is among the best in the division at taking the ball from opponents or committing tactical fouls to prevent them from gaining too much ground.

Joao Pedro could lose his cool again and he is a good price to receive a second yellow card of the season.
