Arsenal Women v Chelsea Women: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Arsenal Women will face Chelsea Women for the third time this season when the Super League rivals contest the League Cup Final at Molineux on Sunday.

The Blues beat the Gunners 3-1 at Stamford Bridge earlier this month to open up a six-point gap on Jonas Eidevall’s team.

Arsenal had thrashed Emma Hayes’ side 4-1 back in December in front of a packed Emirates Stadium and it will be interesting to see which side prevails on neutral territory.

Chelsea, who overcame Ajax over two legs to reach the Champions League semi-finals, have been busier than the Gunners since the last meeting as they attempt to win the quadruple.

But Hayes made seven changes in midweek to keep her stars fresh for this cup clash with the holders, who beat her side 3-1 in last year’s final at Selhurst Park.

Over 3.5 Goals - 6/4

Hayes held back star striker Lauren James and five other regular starters from her line-up that drew 1-1 at home to Ajax on Wednesday night.

James watched the entire game from the bench while Sjoeke Nusken, who scored a brace in the Blues’ recent 3-1 win over Arsenal, only appeared for the final 24 minutes of the European clash.

Both should be restored to Hayes’ starting XI for the final, although the soon-to-be US national team boss did say that goalscorer Mayra Ramirez had given her a selection headache.

Chelsea certainly don’t appear to be missing Sam Kerr too much at the moment as they have scored 39 goals in the 16 games since the Australian suffered an ACL injury during a winter training session.

Ten of those games have featured at least three goals and it would be no surprise to see the cup final produce plenty of opportunities for each side to score.

Five of Arsenal’s last six games have seen at least four goals scored and three of the last four meetings between the London clubs have gone above the 3.5-goal mark.

Half with Most Goals: 1st Half - 21/10

The trend for first-half goals when these two rivals meet cannot be ignored as Chelsea’s three-goal burst before the break in this month's league meeting was in keeping with how recent clashes have gone.

Four of the five goals when the two sides met in North London were registered before the interval and all four of the goals in last year’s League Cup Final came before 45 minutes had been played.

One of the two sides has scored before the midpoint of the first half in each of the last five meetings, but the trend for more goals before half-time seems peculiar to clashes between Chelsea and Arsenal.

Both teams have scored slightly more goals after the interval across the board this season, highlighting superior fitness levels that might not play as much of a part when the teams collide.

Stina Blackstenius to score anytime - 12/5

Chelsea’s James, who was the best player on the pitch in the last meeting, will attract a lot of attention in the goalscorer markets but Arsenal’s biggest attacking threat on Sunday - Stina Blackstenius - offers great value at her anytime price.

The 28-year-old striker gave Chelsea some problems in the last meeting with her direct dribbling and willingness to make runs into space behind the Blues’ backline.

Blackstenius scored against Hayes’ side in last year’s League Cup Final and arrives in prime form after scoring in the Gunners’ 3-1 Super League win over Aston Villa last weekend.

She also scored a hat-trick against Villa in the semi-final last month which, together with a recent goal for Sweden against Bosnia-Herzegovina, means she has scored five times in her last five games.
