Argentina v Canada: Prediction, Tips and Odds

The wait for the 2024 Copa America in the United States is almost over, as reigning champions Argentina face Canada in the tournament opener during the early hours of Friday morning.

Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium is preparing to host the first match of the tournament, as reigning world champions Argentina take on Canada in Georgia.

While the Argentines were stunned by Saudi Arabia in their opening game of the 2022 World Cup, it’s hard to see another upset on Friday like the one witnessed in Qatar.

Argentina v Canada

Argentina v Canada betting tips and predictions

Argentina to win to nil - 10/11

There’s been only one previous meeting between Argentina and Canada and that was back in May 2010, with the South Americans coming out on top 5-0.

Maxi Rodriguez bagged a brace and Angel Di Maria, Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero also scored as the Argentines made light work of Les Rouges that day.

This latest crop of Argentina players look capable of inflicting a similar result on a Canada side that are still getting to grips with new head coach Jesse Marsch.

Back in management after his unsuccessful spell in the Premier League with Leeds United, the former USA international is now plying his trade in the Great White North.

Looking to play a fast-pace game while focusing the attack down the middle of their field, Canada are likely to come up against some fierce resistance in the central areas.

With Lisandro Martinez and Cristian Romero expected to line up in the heart of Argentina's defence, both players will look to give Canada striker Jonathan David a tough time.

Having failed to score against France last time out, it’s hard to see Canada finding a way past Argentina and La Albiceleste should be able to keep a clean sheet on their way to a comprehensive victory.

Over 3 goals - 7/4

The Netherlands ran out 4-0 winners over Canada earlier this month and a similar scoreline might well be on the cards here.

Argentina have not exactly had the most taxing pre-tournament friendlies against El Salvador, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Guatemala but they did score 11 goals across those four games.

In free-scoring form and with Canada’s defence found wanting in that recent performance against the Dutch, over three goals in this game certainly looks achievable.

Lionel Messi to score two or more - 7/2

Set to turn 37-years-old on Monday, Messi will be looking to have a pre-birthday celebration with goals in this Copa America opener.

Scoring twice against Guatemala last time out, the Inter Miami star has now netted 108 goals in 182 appearances for his country.

Still able to burst away from opponents and pick up pockets of space in and around the area, Messi continues to be a nightmare to defend against.

With 12 goals in 12 appearance for Miami in the MLS this season, Messi is still a real threat in the final third and one that Canada will struggle to contain.

Looking at the at the multi scorer markets for this clash in Atlanta, Messi is good value to add at least a couple of goals to his impressive international tally.
