Aldershot Town v Spennymoor Town: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Aldershot Town and Spennymoor Town will both be aiming to make history on Sunday when they meet in the FA Trophy final at Wembley.

Neither team has ever lifted the trophy before and for National League Aldershot, this will be the first visit to Wembley in their history.

Spennymoor, of the National League North, do have previous memories of playing at the home of English football, and positive ones at that, as they beat Tunbridge Wells 2-1 in the final of the FA Vase in 2013.

The Moors are now aiming to become only the second team to complete the Vase-Trophy double, following in the footsteps of AFC Fylde, who lifted this trophy in 2019, 11 years after their Vase success.

Spennymoor Town to win - 3/1

Sixth-tier Spennymoor may ply their trade in the division below Aldershot but they do not have to look very far for inspiration when it comes to causing shocks in the final of this competition, as over the last decade alone, the FA Trophy has been won three times by teams from below the National League.

In 2015, North Ferriby United beat now Championship club Wrexham on penalties, while three years later Brackley Town triumphed in the same manner at the expense of Bromley.

Those two sides were both playing at the same level as Spennymoor when they prevailed at Wembley, while in 2021, Hornchurch became the first team from the seventh tier to achieve the feat when they beat Hereford 3-1.

The Moors can also draw confidence from their own experience in this competition this season, as they have already seen off three National League teams to reach this stage, getting the better of Boston United, Sutton United and Rochdale in successive rounds.

Graeme Lee's side also ended their league campaign in good form, winning eight of their final 11 National League North games, a late-season surge that only just saw them miss out on the promotion play-offs.

By contrast, after booking their place in the final of this competition with a 2-1 victory over Woking at the start of April, Aldershot went on to lose four and win only one of their final six games in the National League, a sequence that saw them end the campaign a disappointing 16th.

That run included a 7-2 loss at York City, a 4-0 reverse to champions Barnet and a 3-0 defeat at Woking - who got their revenge for their semi-final defeat in the Trophy.

Tommy Widdrington's side may have had one eye on this trip to Wembley, with a reported 18,000 Shots supporters set to make the journey from Hampshire, but it will be difficult for them to instantaneously rediscover their best form following those setbacks.

With momentum on their side, Spennymoor could be the value option at 3/1 to cause a shock and, if they do, they will become the 10th team from below the fifth tier to have lifted the trophy in the competition's history.

Glen Taylor to score at any time - 15/8

As a Spennymoor supporter, veteran forward Glen Taylor will be as determined as anyone to deliver glory for his team at Wembley and his form this season certainly suggests he can have a major say.

Taylor is Spennymoor's leading scorer for the campaign, netting 18 times in the National League North and on a further five occasions during this cup run.

The former Blyth Spartans player netted twice in the fourth-round win over Hampton & Richmond Borough, followed that up with a goal against Boston United before claiming another brace in the quarter-final success away to Sutton United.

Having also netted his penalty in the shootout success over Rochdale in the semi-finals, Taylor has been the go-to man for Spennymoor in this competition and, on what will be his 35th birthday, he can have a day to remember at Wembley.

Over 2.5 goals - 4/5

Eight teams may have finished below Aldershot in the final National League standings but only two teams, relegated pair AFC Fylde and Ebbsfleet United, conceded more goals than the Shots total of 83.

Of those 83 goals, 18 were shipped across Aldershot's final six matches of the season, and they will head into this cup final having failed to keep a clean sheet in their last seven across all competitions.

However, the Shots also know how to score. Their tally of 69 league goals was more than three of the top seven in the National League and the same as third-placed Forest Green Rovers.

For their part, Spennymoor were only outscored by one team in the National League North, Kidderminster Harriers, and they have netted in 10 of their last 12 matches across all competitions.

All this suggests that Sunday's Wembley showdown could be an open affair featuring at least three goals.
