AC Milan v Roma: Prediction, Tips and Odds

The quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia take place this month and nine-time winners Roma head to Stadio San Siro for a mouthwatering clash against Italian Super Cup winners AC Milan on Wednesday evening.

The Rossoneri and the Giallorossi both fell at this stage last season and will be desperate to make amends, because neither are having much success in Serie A.

Five-time winners Milan are stuck in eighth place after a last-gasp equaliser from Inter’s Stefan de Vrij denied them a third derby win of the campaign on Sunday.

Roma remain one spot below them in the table after holding leaders Napoli to a 1-1 draw at Stadio Olimpico.

Claudio Ranieri’s side have picked up since he took over in November and come into this clash having lost only one of their last 10 games in all competitions.

AC Milan v Roma betting tips and predictions

Draw (90 minutes) - 5/2

These two sides drew 1-1 when they met in the league late last year, with Roma’s Paulo Dybala cancelling out Tijjani Reijnders’ early strike midway through the first half.

It was a pretty even match overall, with Milan just shading the shots on target count 7-5, while Roma edged the possession stats with 54% of the ball.

The current league positions of these clubs indicate how close this contest could be as there only a handful of points between them.

The possibility of another deadlock occurring over the course of the 90 minutes looks strong.

Roma have drawn eight of their 15 away games in all competitions this season, while four of the Rossoneri's last six home games have also finished all square.

Roma to qualify - 6/5

This is a big game at a pivotal point of the campaign for both clubs, but it is arguably the biggest game of the week for only one them.

The Derby de la Madonnina was the priority for Milan boss Sergio Conceicao as he selected a full-strength side in a bid to do the league double over the Nerazzurri.

However, Ranieri rested his two leading marksman for the Derby del Sole against Napoli.

Artem Dovbyk, who has scored six goals in his last 10 appearances, looks set to resume his partnership with Dybala for this clash and both frontmen should be fresh.

Their energy levels could make the difference if this clash goes to extra-time, while the Rossoneri may be a touch fatigued after they were pushed all the way by Inter on Sunday.

Over 5.5 Cards in the match - 11/10

December’s duel between the clubs turned out to be a hard-fought and heated Serie A clash that featured nine yellow cards.

With little more than six weeks between that game and this, there is a chance for one or two simmering feuds to resurface.

Given the potential for another explosive clash, it is interesting to note the referee appointment for the game.

Marco Piccinini is hardly the most experienced official the Italian referee association could have chosen for the tie, as he has taken charge of only eight top-flight games this term and no cup matches in the last 18 months.

The 41-year-old, who will be officiating at the San Siro for the first time in almost a year, has issued 31 yellow cards and one red in his last seven league appointments.

And with what is at stake for both teams in this game being so high, there is a good chance that he reaches for his pocket at least half a dozen times on Wednesday.
