Ryder Cup: Five US players who could make the team

The USA will be eyeing up another thumping victory when they take on their European counterparts in Ryder Cup 2023 at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club.

Boasting their strongest ever side in terms of world rankings, the American outfit produced a stunning record-breaking performance to defeat Europe 19-9 at Whistling Straits last year and win back the trophy they lost at Le Golf National in 2018.

As things stand, there are nine players ranked in the top 15 of the world rankings, while there are three individuals ranked 16th, 17th and 18th, and the 12-man team could effectively be made up of these players.

However, a lot can change from now until the end of qualifying for the event in Italy and after taking a look at five contenders to make Europe's side, we have now done the same for the US.

Max Homa

Ranked 17th in the world, Max Homa has moved up a gear over the past couple of years and he looks sure to get one of the six captain's picks, if he fails to qualify automatically.

The 32-year-old has won four PGA Tour titles since February 2021, taking his overall tally to five, and his performance on his Presidents Cup debut this year will have not gone unnoticed.

Homa won all four of his matches at Quail Hollow Golf Club and it's worth noting that he was paired with Tony Finau - a player expected to be in Italy - on two occasions and Billy Horschel once.

The 32-year-old has a real aptitude for match play golf and that was evident throughout the Presidents Cup, with his determination, energy and quality displays a joy to watch.

Billy Horschel

Quite often at Ryder Cups it comes down to who performs best on the greens, so it would make sense to have one of the best wielders of the flat-stick, Billy Horschel, on your team.

Even though he has won seven times on the PGA Tour and twice on the DP circuit, the 36-year-old has never been part of a Ryder Cup, but that could all change in 2023.

Horschel played some really consistent stuff this year - the highlight being his win at The Memorial Tournament - and he proved his affinity for match play golf when also making his Presidents Cup debut.

The American, who also triumphed at the 2021 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, won when partnered with Homa and those two could be a potential pairing at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club.

Tom Hoge

It has also been a breakthrough year for Tom Hoge, who landed his maiden PGA Tour title at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February - holding off Jordan Spieth by two strokes.

The 33-year-old recorded his best Major finish at the PGA Championship, finishing tied-ninth, while he was also fifth at the Tour Championship in 72-hole scoring.

Ranked 37th in the world, Hoge will be eager to maintain his form over the coming months and ensure he keeps himself in contention for either an automatic spot or a captain's pick.

Sahith Theegala

Sitting 43rd in the rankings is Sahith Theegala, who is yet to win an official PGA Tour event but came close on several occasions during a promising rookie season.

The 25-year-old looks to be a real talent and he won the QBE Shootout earlier this month, partnering Hoge to triumph by one stroke from Charley Hoffman and Ryan Palmer.

Theegala and Hoge combined really well over the 36-hole scramble event and the fact they already have a winning partnership to boast can only be beneficial to their chances of making the team.

Maverick McNealy

This is an outside shot but there is a lot to like about the way Maverick McNealy has been going about his business.

Although yet to break his PGA Tour duck, the 27-year-old is currently in his best ever world ranking of 61st and his consistent performances are taking him in the right direction.

McNealy has experience of playing team events as an amateur, having won the Arnold Palmer Cup in 2015 and 2017 and also landed the Walker Cup in 2017.

A solid 2023 is required for the Californian to muscle his way into Johnson's plans, but he has the ability to do this and one or two victories next year could set him on his way.
