Five contenders to be the next Sheffield Wednesday manager

We've taken a look at five contenders to be the next manager of Sheffield Wednesday as the club searches for Henrik Pedersen's replacement.

Pedersen was relieved of his duties following the 2-0 defeat away at Doncaster Rovers last weekend.

Former Owls midfielder Matt Hamshaw has since taken temporary charge of the team and he was in the dugout for Tuesday's 1-1 draw at home to Cambridge United.

The club are currently ninth in League One after being one of the pre-season promotion favourites and they will be hoping that a new manager can help push the team forward.

Here are our top five contenders to be the next Sheffield Wednesday manager.

Next Sheffield Wednesday Manager Contenders

Dave Challinor

Former Stockport County boss Dave Challinor was a contender for the role in the summer following the club's relegation from the Championship.

The club stuck with Pedersen on that occasion but he has once again been heavily linked with the job in the last week.

Challinor left Stockport following the defeat to Bolton Wanderers in last season's League One play-off final and he has achieved a play-off finish or better in each of his 15 full campaigns as a manager.

Paul Heckingbottom

Paul Heckingbottom was sacked from his role at Championship strugglers Preston North End in September.

The Lilywhites had picked up six defeats in their first seven matches, but Heckingbottom has been linked with multiple jobs since.

The former Sheffield United manager would have to win the fans over at Hillsborough despite representing the Owls during his playing career.

Gary Rowett

Gary Rowett is out of work following his departure from Leicester City at the end of last season.

The 52-year-old would provide a wealth of experience having managed over 600 matches in the football league.

The chance to lead a promotion charge with Wednesday could also be a nice change from walking into firefighting situations in recent times.

Matt Hamshaw

Current interim boss Matt Hamshaw knows the club well and he has a chance to audition for the role whilst on the job.

There are more experienced names on the list with better CVs but results could well sway the thinking of the club's hierarchy.

Hamshaw's time at Rotherham United came to an end in March with the club on their way to relegation from League One.

Andy Woodman

The decision by Bromley to sack Andy Woodman is arguably one of the most curious EFL sackings in recent memory.

Bromley are playing League One football for the first time in their history, yet Woodman was dismissed just three months into the campaign earlier this month.

The popular former goalkeeper led Bromley into the football league, before winning the League Two title last season.
