NRL: Fittler hopes for Mitchell return

New South Wales coach Brad Fittler is not giving up hope of Latrell Mitchell being fit for game one of this year’s State of Origin series.

NSW are gunning to win State of Orgin but the loss of Mitchell to injury would be a big blow to their chances of beating Queensland.

Hamstring injury

South Sydney ace Mitchell picked up a torn hamstring at the weekend and the early signs are he will be on the sidelines for up to eight weeks.

That would make him a huge doubt for game one but Fittler is hoping Mitchell’s determination to get fit could lead to a speedy recovery.

“Just knowing how much it meant to Latrell last year to get back in the team, and how well he performed, I’m holding out that eight weeks might turn into six weeks," Fittler said.

“Every player is different, we treat every player different.

“We picked Tom Trbojevic a couple of years ago, he came back (from injury) for one game, and he did so well we brought him into the team and he was excellent. Just sit back and we’ll see what happens with Latrell."

Possible replacements

Should the worst happen and Mitchell miss out, NSW do have plenty of strength in depth and Fittler has options.

“Most centres these days play left or right, so they get in those habits," Fittler said. “The ones at the moment who are playing on the left-hand side are Bradman Best, who’s been in the junior system a long time, Stephen Crichton, who can play left and Matt Burton is another one.”
