Finalissima 2025: Date, teams, venue, history & how to watch

The Finalissima is a match contested once every four years which pits the winner of the Copa America against the winners of the European Championships.

2022 saw the first-ever Finalissima hosted at Wembley Stadium between Italy and Argentina, though the tradition of the best teams from UEFA and CONMEBOL going head-to-head in a one-off fixture dates back to 1985.

The next edition of the competition will see Argentina attempt to retain their Finalissima title when they take on European champions Spain.

Finalissima date

No official date has been confirmed for the 2025 Finalissima, though the previous edition was played in June 2022 and it's expected that the 2025 fixture will be played in the same month.

Finalissima venue

Like the date, the venue of the next Finalissima is yet to be finalised.

The 2022 final was staged at Wembley Stadium and it's likely another neutral venue will host the fixture.

Finalissima teams

The 2025 Finalissima will be contested by Argentina and Spain.

Argentina successfully defended their Copa America title with a 1-0 triumph over Colombia, while Spain secured a record fourth European Championship crown thanks a 2-1 victory against England in Berlin.

Finalissima format

The Finalissima is a one-off fixture that's played over 90 minutes.

If the score is level at the end of regulation time, the match will go straight to penalties.

Finalissima history

Named the Artemio Franchi Cup when first introduced in 1985, the competition was created as an intercontinental super cup between UEFA and CONMEBOL.

The inaugural fixture was held at the Parc des Princes between Euro 1984 winners France and 1983 Copa America victors Uruguay, with Les Bleus prevailing 2-0.

It was meant to be staged again four years later, but the Netherlands and Uruguay were unable to agree on a date and the match was subsequently scrapped.

1993 saw the next edition of the competition as 1991 Copa America winners Argentina hosted Euro 1992 champions Denmark in Mar del Plata, with La Albiceleste conquering the Danes on penalties.

The competition was discontinued thereafter but in 2020, a renewed agreement between UEFA and CONMEBOL saw the competition relaunched as the Finalissima.

The initial contract proposed three editions of the Finalissima, with the first contest staged in 2022 between Italy and Argentina at Wembley Stadium. Lionel Scaloni's men won the match 3-0 courtesy of goals from Lautaro Martinez, Angel Di Maria and Paulo Dybala.

2023 also saw the launch of the Women's Finalissima, with Euro 2022 winners England facing Copa America Femenina champions Brazil.

Finalissima how to watch

TV details for the 2025 Finalissima are yet to be confirmed.

The 2022 Finalissima was broadcast live on Premier Sports for UK residents.
