Super League: Final round storylines to look out for

The 2022 Super League campaign is nearly over, with just one final round of matches to come this weekend.

St Helens have already been crowned the winners of the League Leaders' Shield, but the main focus will be on Headingley as Leeds Rhinos, and Castleford Tigers fight it out for the final playoff spot.

The last time Leeds and Castleford faced each other in a game of this magnitude was in 2017 when the Rhinos beat Castleford 24-6 in the Super League Grand Final.

Leeds' experience at the highest level got them into a winning position, and they never looked back at Old Trafford, while it is fair to say the occasion got to Castleford.

While there is no trophy on the line this time, the game still has a "do or die" feel.

Whoever wins the battle at Headingley will secure sixth spot, joining St Helens, Wigan Warriors, Huddersfield Giants, Catalans Dragons and Salford Red Devils in the playoffs.

Leeds could have booked their spot in the top six on Monday, but they lost 32-18 in France to Catalans Dragons, which helped Salford book their place as they thrashed Castleford 50-10 away from home.

Rohan Smith's Leeds won the previous meeting between the two clubs in July. Still, with the pressure on, the Tigers have every chance of landing the spoils under Lee Radford.

Leeds are 10/11 to cover the -11.5 handicap, but the Tigers will fancy their chances, having won three of the previous four meetings between the two clubs.

St Helens can make history this season as the first club to win four Grand Finals in succession.

The Merseyside outfit have been the best team in the country for several seasons, but they still need to prove they can handle a new challenge.

That will come this weekend, when even though they face already-relegated Toulouse. In the build-up to Saturday's contest, coach Kristian Woolf has confirmed he will be moving on at the end of the season, with the Tonga boss planning to return home to Australia.

Saints' squad have handled adversity in the past, but they now need to go all the way to the Grand Final, knowing they will play for a new coach in 2023.

Saints remain 5/4 favourites to win the Grand Final, while local rivals Wigan Warriors are 19/10 to get their hands on the trophy.

Wigan need to iron out some issues

Wigan's recent win over St Helens proved they can compete with the best that Super League has to offer, but they were brought back down to earth by Hull KR last time out.

Even though the Robins' team is decimated by injury, they proved more than a match for Wigan. However, Cherry and Whites coach Matty Peet did name a weakened squad.

Peet has recalled 12 players for this weekend's battle against Catalans Dragons, but his side need to get back to winning ways at a crucial stage of the campaign.

Halfback Thomas Leuluai will return from a lengthy spells on the sidelines, but Liam Farrell will sit out after picking up an injury against St Helens.

Dragons coach Steve McNamara is planning to make several changes as he tries to plan ahead for the playoffs, but momentum is key at this stage of the campaign, and neither side will want to lose their rhythm before the playoffs get underway.

Elsewhere in Super League, Huddersfield Giants will host Wakefield Trinity on Friday evening, with Ian Watson's men fine-tuning their preparation for the playoffs.

There is a Hull derby to look forward to on Saturday as Hull FC do battle with Hull KR, while Salford host Warrington Wolves in the final match of the season.
