Premier League: Fantasy gameweek 16 preview

Original article published 10 November 2022

Fantasy football lovers have just one more week to climb their mini-leagues and tweak their team as the Premier League prepares to come to a halt for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Fantasy managers have to deal with the unique situation of a mid-season break, but they will get the chance to tweak their team as much as they want without any repercussions until the Premier League returns on Boxing Day.

Last week was all about the differentials, with the likes of Lucas Digne, Crysesncio Summerville, Adam Lallana and Marcus Tavernier all scoring at least ten points.

Gameweek 16 should offer some decent opportunities for the FPL mainstays, with Manchester City taking on Brentford while Liverpool face Southampton.

So without further ado, here are our five players of the week for gameweek 16.

Goalkeeper - Alisson

A new era starts at Southampton this weekend as Nathan Jones prepares to take charge of the Saints for the first time.

The former Luton Town coach has not been done any favours by the fixture schedule, however, with his first trip coming away to Liverpool at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp's side have lost just two of their previous nine matches in all competitions, while they have kept three clean sheets in their last five.

Alisson is our goalkeeper of choice this week, with Southampton failing to score in four of their previous five on the road.

A home win to nil is too good to ignore at 5/4, especially with Liverpool winning the previous five meetings against Southampton at Anfield without conceding.

Defender - Ben White

Arsenal travel to Wolves on Saturday night knowing a win will mean they top the standings at Christmas.

Mikel Arteta's side have only lost once all season, and their defensive record in the top flight is the best alongside Newcastle United.

The Gunners have only conceded 11 goals all season, and with White scoring 23 points in four weeks, it is hard to overlook him this weekend.

White is relatively cheap, so fantasy managers can spend their money elsewhere, and Arsenal should win to nil at odds of 13/8.

Midfielder - Phil Foden

Manchester City's fixture against Brentford is the one to target, even though boss Pep Guardiola may start playing his usual "Pep Roulette" games.

Midfielder Foden was named on the bench against Fulham, but he should return to the fold this weekend ahead of the World Cup. He has already scored 67 points this season, and readers can back him to score anytime at 2/1.

Midfielder - Mohamed Salah

Fantasy managers that sold Salah were cursing themselves last week as the Egypt international scored twice to help his side beat Tottenham 2-1.

That was Salah's first double-digit haul since gameweek five, but with Southampton in town, things could get ugly for Jones' men.

Salah is 10/3 to score anytime on Saturday or 15/4 to score two or more.

Forward - Erling Haaland

If any reader has played any version of fantasy football without Haaland, then it is probably time for you to stop and come back next season.

He has already scored 122 points in the official Fantasy Premier League game, after scoring three hat-tricks in eight matches.

After a few weeks of rest, Haaland will be desperate to bow out on a high and reach 20 goals for the season before the break.

He already has 18 to his name, and Haaland is 5/1 to score three or more in Saturday's lunchtime kick-off.
