Lando Norris' career so far

Norris started out in F1 as a reserve/test driver with McLaren in 2018 and was elevated to a full-time seat for the following season.

He claimed a first podium finish came in 2020, with a first pole position coming a year later, but it was in 2024 when he really broke through as he won four Grands Prix and secured no fewer than eight pole positions.

Biography

The son of a wealthy British businessman, Lando Norris was born in Bristol and began karting at the age of seven. He attended Millfield School in Somerset and moved to live in Monaco in 2022.

Journey to F1

Lando Norris had a successful junior karting career, winning the European Championship aged 14 in 2013 and the following year he became the youngest ever world champion.

Norris began racing single-seaters cars in 2014, finishing third in the Ginetta Junior championship. He moved up to Formula 4 in 2015 with Carlin Motorsport, winning the championship with future IndyCar star Colton Herta in third.

In 2016, he won the Eurocup Formula Renault, Formula Renault Northern European Cup and the Toyota Racing Series as well as winning four races in British Formula 3.

In 2017 he was Formula 3 European champion and the next year he was second to George Russell in the Formula 2 championship with Alex Albon third.

F1 career to date

McLaren

Norris has spent all of his F1 career to date with the McLaren team. After serving as the British team's test and reserve driver in 2018, he secured a race seat partnering Carlos Sainz Jr. in 2019.

He finished behind his more experienced team-mate in 11th position, scoring 49 points including two top-six finishes.

The following year, he claimed his first career podium finish in the opening race of the rescheduled season in Austria, but two fourth places was the best he could manage over the rest of the campaign as he finished ninth, although he almost doubled his points tally with 97.

A highlight of 2021 for Norris was his first pole position at the Russian Grand Prix, although he threw away what looked like a certain first win when he stayed out too long on slick tyres as a thunderstorm hit.

His runner-up finish in the previous race in Italy (won by his team-mate Daniel Ricciardo) was his highest placing, and he ended the year sixth with 160 points.

2022 brought only one podium and seventh in the standings, but 2023 saw Norris move towards the front of the grid with seven podiums including six second places as McLaren upgraded his car in the middle of the season.

In 2024 he became a true title contender and finished as runner-up, although a slow start enabled Max Verstappen to build a big lead in the championship.

Norris secured his first victory in the Miami Grand Prix and added successes in the Netherlands, Singapore and Abu Dhabi, but he missed chances to finish closer to the champion after earning eight pole positions.

Lando Norris best races

Norris' fast finish to make up two places late on in the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix to claim his first podium was impressive and earned him the nickname 'Last Lap Lando'.

His podium in the 2023 British Grand Prix was a huge confidence booster as McLaren finally delivered a competitive car.

While Norris recorded his first career win in Miami in 2024, he was aided by a late safety-car period in that race and his most impressive performance arguably came in his season-ending performance to win the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, when he was under pressure to deliver the constructors' championship for his team.

Lando Norris best season

2024 was the best season of Norris' career so far as he finished runner-up to Verstappen with 374 points, a huge step forward on his previous best of 205 in 2023.

An excellent qualifier, he had a period of losing some prominent grid positions with slow getaways, but has worked hard to correct that issue.

Thoughts on Norris' racing style

"He’s more critical about a session or a lap than we are and to me that means he’s constantly wanting to improve and analysing what he’s doing and how he can improve." - McLaren CEO Zak Brown.

"A lot of world champions are sweethearts outside of the race car, but pretty fierce once the helmet goes on and Lando is no different."
