Britain's Lando Norris is 11/8 to win the Formula 1 World Drivers' Championship as he closes the gap on leader Max Verstappen.
Following two successive seasons in which Verstappen proved imperious, spectators were bracing themselves for another processional campaign with the three-time world champion beginning the current campaign in equally dominant fashion.
Chalking up seven wins from the opening 10 races, all signs suggested Verstappen would ease to a fourth consecutive Drivers' Championship in comprehensive fashion.
However, two months on from his last race victory in Barcelona, Verstappen enters the closing stages on the back foot with Norris nibbling away at his championship advantage in a superior McLaren.
Securing his first Grand Prix win in Miami in April before adding a second career triumph at Zandvoort, Norris finds himself in unchartered territory as his team provide him with a car that is capable of winning the championship.
Trailing Verstappen by 62 points with eight races remaining, the form book suggests the battle for the title will go down to the wire and Norris has all the tools he needs at his disposal as he seeks to become the 11th world champion to hail from Great Britain.
Should Norris be able to overhaul Verstappen at the top of the standings and claim his maiden title, the British driver will be a major contender for the Sports Personality of the Year award.
Since the inaugural SPOTY ceremony in 1954 there have been five different Formula 1 drivers to claim the prestigious gong; Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart, Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill and Lewis Hamilton.
Seven-time world champion Hamilton was the last F1 recipient of the award, winning it for a second time in 2020 after previously pipping Rory McIlroy in 2014.
Norris is currently the second-favourite in the betting, behind 800m Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson.
