Lando Norris put previous disappointments behind him to cruise to victory at the Dutch Grand Prix and the Briton could further close the gap to F1 World Drivers' Championship leader Max Verstappen in Italy.
Norris had entered the summer break in a seemingly downtrodden mood after a number of mistakes from both himself and the McLaren pit wall cost him valuable points in the races leading up to the break.
However, he spoke of a much-needed reset during the break and that appeared to pay dividends in Verstappen’s home country.
The home hero briefly claimed the lead after another poor start from Norris, but the papaya package was clearly superior to the Red Bull on race day and that helped the 24-year-old to claim a dominant victory as he passed the chequered flag almost 23 seconds ahead of second-placed Verstappen.
The gap between the two friends at the top of the World Drivers’ Championship now stands at 70 points, while Red Bull’s lead in the World Constructors’ Championship has been cut to just 30 points.
Lando Norris to win - 1/1
Norris cut a frustrated figure after his fifth place at Spa before the summer break, but his vow to take the time off to reset both mentally and physically certainly appeared to help him on F1’s return to action in the Netherlands last weekend.
Norris produced a stunning lap in qualifying to take pole position, over three-tenths clear of Max Verstappen and half-a-second quicker than team-mate Oscar Piastri.
He was once again put on the back foot by a poor start as Verstappen, aiming to extend his 100 per cent record at his home Grand Prix, went into turn one ahead, but the Briton showed patience and pace to pass the Dutchman on lap 18 and a dominant performance followed.
The McLaren driver eventually took the chequered flag by over 22 seconds - the largest winning margin of the season - for the second Grand Prix win of his career, meaning he is favourite to land a third around Monza.
The papaya car, boasting a host of new upgrades, outclassed Red Bull’s waning machine in every department in the Netherlands and there is little to suggest that the Milton Keynes-based team can mount a comeback at the Temple of Speed.
Red Bull were slow at the end of the straights at Zandvoort and if that continues Norris, who has finished either first or second in seven of the last 11 races, looks a good bet to continue mounting his World Drivers' Championship challenge.
Oscar Piastri to finish on the podium - 1/1
Norris' team-mate Piastri should not be discounted either, despite a poor afternoon at Zandvoort last weekend.
He may have finished a disappointing fourth, but Piastri has proven he is every bit as capable as he was hyped up to be in his second season in Formula One.
The 23-year-old took his maiden Grand Prix victory in a somewhat controversial Hungarian Grand Prix and he has not finished lower than fourth in any of the last five Grands Prix.
He has finished on the podium in three of those races and he can bag another top-three finish in Italy this weekend.
Nico Hulkenberg to finish in the points - 5/4
Nico Hulkenberg narrowly missed out on a points finish last weekend after his tyres faded away from him in the closing stages, but the German could find himself back in the top 10 at a circuit that should suit his Haas.
The Haas package has shown excellent straight-line speed this season and Hulkenberg was fifth in the Zandvoort speed trap during qualifying, so that should play into the American team’s hands around the quickest circuit on the F1 calendar.
The German finished fifth at Monza for Renault in 2019 and has claimed 22 of Haas’ 27 points this season. He can clinch a sixth points finish of the year on Sunday.
