The 2026 Formula 1 season has been all about Mercedes, but world champion Lando Norris put in a reminder of why he carries the number one on his car by securing pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The last four races have been won by four different drivers as Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc and Mercedes pilots George Russell and Kimi Antonelli have each taken a turn on the top step.
And Norris will be hoping to extend that sequence at a circuit where his team have been dominant in recent seasons.

McLaren have scored one-two finishes in each of the last two seasons at the Hungaroring and they have enjoyed a strong weekend in Budapest so far this year.
Oscar Piastri has not been able to match the pace of his world champion team-mate Lando Norris so far, but he starts a handy third on the grid thanks to penalties for Hamilton and Antonelli.
Piastri scored two podium finishes earlier in the season and has been in the top five in four of the last five races.
The exception was when he was 11th at Silverstone, but he had to make a pit-stop to replace his front wing on the first lap and was completely detached from the field for the early part of the race.
His pace thereafter compared favourably with the leaders and a much better result may have been possible.
The Australian scored his maiden victory at the Hungaroring two years ago and was only denied a repeat last year by a strategy call, so he looks overpriced to at least maintain his starting position.

Ferrari looked to have the upper hand earlier in the weekend and, while Leclerc is a little lucky to be starting second following the penalty for his team-mate Hamilton, he can make the most of his front-row berth.
Superb starts have been key in Leclerc winning in Britain and finishing second in Belgium in his last two starts and the Monegasque should be able to bring home another strong result.
Norris won in Hungary last season and looked very happy with McLaren's latest upgrades as he took pole position.
He won the Sprint in Miami earlier in the year and can put in a bold bid for his first Grand Prix win of the campaign.
