Not to be confused with the San Marino Grand Prix which was held between 1981 and 2006, Imola returned to the Formula 1 calendar in 2020 under the guise of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, the region where the circuit is located.

It was initially reintroduced to fill the vacant spaces on the Covid-affected 2020 schedule but has remained on the calendar ever since, although the 2023 event was cancelled to due flooding affecting the region.

Lewis Hamilton won the inaugural Emilia Romagna Grand Prix prior to a period of domination by Max Verstappen, who has taken the chequered flag at the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari on three consecutive occasions for Red Bull.
