F1 Constructors' Championship permutations: How McLaren or Ferrari can win the title

The battle for the 2024 Formula 1 Constructors' Championship will be settled in the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

In a fascinating campaign which has ebbed and flowed, 21 points separates McLaren and Ferrari at the summit.

The pair leapfrogged early pacesetters Red Bull in the standings, though the deteriorating form of the Austrian drinks company did not prevent Max Verstappen from being crowned world champion for a fourth successive year.

It's been 26 years since McLaren last won the Constructors' Championship, while Ferrari's last success came in 2008.

Ahead of the concluding race, we look at what both McLaren and Ferrari need to win the constructors' title.

F1 Points System Explained

What McLaren need to win F1 Constructors' Championship

1/9 to claim their first constructors' title in over two-and-a-half decades, McLaren hold a 21-point lead at the top of the standings with a maximum of 44 points on offer in Abu Dhabi.

If Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri combine for 24 points or more, McLaren are crowned champions. Victory for either driver would secure the championship, while a top-four finish for both Norris and Piastri in the Abu Dhabi GP will guarantee them the title.

Both McLaren drivers can afford to finish behind the Ferrari pairing of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, providing it's not in excess of 21 points.

Remember, there's a bonus point available for the fastest lap, which could prove pivotal on Sunday.

If the two teams were to finish level on points at the end of the Abu Dhabi GP, the Constructors' Championship will be determined by race victories, though McLaren and Ferrari currently both have five victories each.

The next tie-breaker considers the number of second places across the season, of which McLaren lead Ferrari 10-4.

McLaren are champions if...

  • If one of Norris or Piastri win the race
  • Both drivers finish in the top four
  • Ferrari fail to outscore them by 24 points or more

What Ferrari need to win F1 Constructors' Championship

The odds are stacked against Ferrari, who are 11/2 to win the title. Even a 1-2 finish may not be enough if the McLaren duo finish 3rd and 4th.

If a Ferrari driver wins the Abu Dhabi GP and they outscore McLaren by 21 points, the Italian constructor wins the title. If neither Ferrari driver wins the race, they will need to outscore McLaren by 22 points given the aforementioned tie-breaker rules.

So for example, if Leclerc and Sainz record a 1-2 finish and the McLaren pairing of Norris and Piastri finish 4th and 5th, the two teams will be level on points but Ferrari will be crowned constructors' champions by account of race victories.

Ferrari are champions if...

  • Either Leclerc or Sainz wins the race and they outscore McLaren by 21 points
  • They outscore McLaren by 22 points
