Silverstone - British Grand Prix F1
  1. F1

British winners at Silverstone

Silverstone first hosted the British Grand Prix in 1948 as Italian driver Luigi Villoresi took the chequered flag for Maserati and it became a permanent fixture on the Formula One calendar in 1987.

It has become one of the most iconic and entertaining tracks in motor racing and a number of home drivers have enjoyed success through the years.

The 5.891-kilometre track is host to 18 turns, including the blisteringly fast Copse Corner and the famous sequence of turns known as Maggotts, Becketts, and Chapel.

Peter Collins

While the famous Stirling Moss was the first British driver to win the British Grand Prix, his 1955 success was earned at Aintree, and we were made to wait until 1958 before Peter Collins clinched victory for Ferrari around Silverstone.

Collins was one of 12 British drivers on the grid that day, with Moss qualifying on pole and six of the top seven qualifiers all hoping for success in front of a home crowd.

However, an engine failure took Moss, one of 11 retirees that day, out of the running after 25 laps, opening the door for Collins to take the glory in his final season in Formula One.

Jim Clark

Scotsman Jim Clark was the next Briton to take the chequered flag at Silverstone with his 1963 win and the Lotus-Climax driver would go on to dominate the British Grand Prix for years to come.

He won five of the six British Grand Prix between 1962 and 1967, three of which came at Silverstone, including a dramatic 1965 edition where he hung on to victory despite a worsening oil-pressure issue causing him to lose two seconds per lap.

Jackie Stewart

With Clark tragically losing his life in 1968, it didn't take long for another Scottish driver to rise to the top as Sir Jackie Stewart took the crown in 1969 at Silverstone in the first of three World Drivers' Championship-winning seasons.

While his first British Grand Prix success was characterised by a lengthy battle with Jochen Rindt, his second and final win at Silverstone saw Stewart take the lead and eventually coast to a 36-second win and went on to win his second world title.

James Hunt

It was another six years before we saw a Briton on the top step of the Silverstone podium, when defending world champion James Hunt recovered from a poor start to win his latest battle with rival Niki Lauda.

The McLaren driver eventually won - for the first time that season - by over 18 seconds, but Lauda would have the last laugh as he went on to win the second of three World Drivers' Championships in 1977.

John Watson

Five years after his maiden Formula One win in the Austrian Grand Prix, Northern Irish driver John Watson became the fifth British man to win a Formula One race around Silverstone in the 1981 British Grand Prix.

This proved the springboard for his most successful season in the sport in 1982, where he finished third in the World Drivers' Championship, including a number of impressive recovery drives from the back of the grid.

Nigel Mansell

Fresh from winning the 1986 British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch, Nigel Mansell secured one of the most impressive victories of his career on his return to Silverstone in 1987.

He broke the lap record eight times in the final 28 laps as he hunted down team-mate Nelson Piquet, eventually passing the Brazilian with three laps remaining before blowing up the engine as he crossed the finish line.

Mansell went on to win two more British Grands Prix, both of which were grand slam victories (pole position, leading every lap, and posting the fastest lap), and his 1992 victory saw him surpass Stewart as the British driver with the most Grand Prix wins.

Damon Hill

A fresh-faced Damon Hill made his Formula One debut during Mansell’s 1992 successful season and two years later the London-born driver would write his own name in Silverstone's history books.

Hill won the race by over a minute, but it is most remembered for Michael Schumacher's disqualification after he overtook Hill four times on formation laps, refused to serve a penalty and then refused to acknowledge the black flag he was shown.

Johnny Herbert

Amid yet another tussle for the championship between Hill and Schumacher an unlikely name ended up at the front of the pack in the 1995 British Grand Prix, as Johnny Herbert took the plaudits with the first of only three victories across his 12-year career in Formula One.

David Coulthard

After six years of finishing around the podium positions, another Scotsman rose to the occasion at Silverstone as David Coulthard won the 1995 British Grand Prix, handing McLaren their first British Grand Prix win in a decade.

Coulthard would go on to repeat the feat the following year, taking advantage of a battle between teammate Mika Hakkinen and World Drivers' Championship leader Michael Schumacher.

Lewis Hamilton

After Coulthard's 2000 success, we were made to wait eight years before another British driver succeeded at Silverstone, but Lewis Hamilton has made the circuit his own since that 2008 breakthrough.

That victory was crucial in the battle for his maiden World Drivers' Championship, as he eventually beat Felipe Massa by just a single point.

Hamilton continued to perform well at his home Grand Prix, but a period of Red Bull dominance meant he had to wait until 2014 for his next win at the circuit.

The seven-time world champion has gone on to win the British Grand Prix a record nine times, including a shock victory in 2024 in arguably the third-best car on the grid.

Lando Norris

It was back-to-back British winners at Silverstone as Lando Norris followed up Lewis Hamilton's success in 2024 by ruling supreme in 2025.

On a chaotic afternoon dominated by rain and safety cars, Norris effectively navigated the track and produced a sensational performance to add his name to this illustrious list.

Norris delighted a record home crowd by benefitting from a 10-second penalty given to teammate Oscar Piastri, who was found to have driven erratically during a restart after one of two safety-car periods.
