British Grand Prix Tips and Predictions

The Formula 1 world championship began at Silverstone in 1950 and 75 years on the sport is as popular as ever.

The capacity crowd will be full of expectation with Lando Norris arriving fresh from his victory in Austria last week, but the championship contender is not the only Briton in contention.

Lewis Hamilton scored a surprise win at the Northamptonshire venue last year, and Racing Post tipster Adam Scriven sees some value in backing another Brit, George Russell to take the spoils this weekend.

British Grand Prix Prediction

Best Bet: George Russell @ 10/1

George Russell has a pretty miserable record at Silverstone, but the form on paper doesn't tell the whole story.

He took pole position for his home race last year but suffered a mechanical failure, while in 2022 he was eliminated in the huge opening-corner crash which saw Zhou Guanyu sliding upside down along the home straight before somersaulting into the catch fencing.

His fifth place in 2023 is Russell's best result so far at Silverstone, but he could leave that behind this weekend.

Russell dominated in Montreal last month, claiming pole position, winning the race and taking fastest lap.

While the sweeping curves of Silverstone are unlikely to suit the Mercedes as well as the Canadian track did, the mild weather forecast could help offset that.

The British driver struggled in the searing heat in Austria last week, but was able to finish fifth and is one of the most consistent performers on the grid.

His pole at the track last year, in a car which had had similar strengths to this season's model, suggests he should be competitive while the relatively gloomy forecast will be a huge boost to his chances.

Russell is odds-against for a podium finish, which is of interest, but he can't be ruled out for victory and backing his each-way at 10/1 makes more appeal.

Adam Scriven explains:

Cool weather could be a major factor in making Mercedes competitive at Silverstone and, having taken pole position at the track last year, Russell can thrill the home crowd with victory.

Alternative Bet: Nico Hulkenberg points finish @ 9/4

Sauber have been surprisingly competitive in the final year before Audi takes over the team and the odds have yet to catch up with them.

Veteran Nico Hulkenberg has collected three points finishes in a row. That fact is made even more impressive by the fact that he started last on the grid in Austria last week.

The German finished ninth at the Red Bull Ring, eighth in Canada and was a brilliant fifth in Spain despite starting 15th.

Sauber rookie Gabriel Bortoleto picked up his first points of the year with a solid drive to eighth place to further demonstrate the capabilities of the car.

There is no reason Silverstone shouldn't suit the car and Hulkenberg is a nice price at 9/4 to extend his run of top-ten finishes.

Alex Wrigley adds:

Hulkenberg is an F1 stalwart but there is plenty of life left in the German, who has three straight points finishes and who is attractively priced to make it four in a row this weekend.
