British Grand Prix: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Lando Norris backers have had their fingers burned in the last three races as potential victories have slipped away from the McLaren man, but Racing Post's Adam Scriven believes it could be fourth time lucky for the British driver in front of the Silverstone crowd.

Lando Norris to win - 5/2

Last year the Silverstone crowd roared as Lando Norris beat Max Verstappen off the line to lead the opening laps of the British Grand Prix.

It wasn't to last on that occasion, but with a much stronger McLaren at his disposal this time, Norris fans will flock to the circuit more in expectation than hope of seeing their man triumph.

The last two races, in Spain and Austria, as well as three of the last five, have seen Norris and Verstappen share the front row, and there has to be a fair chance that happens again this weekend.

Red Bull ace Verstappen holds a colossal 81-point lead in the championship as he seeks his fourth title. He extended his advantage again in Austria last week despite limping home in fifth following a collision that put Norris out of the race.

For the second weekend in a row, Norris was reeling in the Red Bull as the laps ticked down, and there was a feeling that if he could have found a way past, the McLaren driver would have been able to open up a gap.

Norris also saw a winning chance disappear in Canada previously, as he lost the lead due to a poor strategy decision during a mid-race safety car period.

It is surely a matter of when, rather than if Norris can add to his Miami Grand Prix victory. With its fast, sweeping corners, Silverstone looks the closest to a perfect track for McLaren that there is on the calendar.

The Bristolian is proving expensive to follow, but he is the clear pick at the prices this weekend.

Oscar Piastri podium finish - 6/5

While it was heartbreak for Norris in Austria, under slightly different circumstances his McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri may have inherited the victory.

Piastri initially qualified third, behind the new big two, but was dropped to seventh after his fastest lap was deleted for a controversial track limits infringement, appealed unsuccessfully by the team.

The Australian finished second, having been unable to close down new leader George Russell after Verstappen and Norris' clash, but had he started four places higher Piastri, would quite probably have profited for the win.

Piastri was also unlucky at Silverstone last year, qualifying third and looking set for a maiden podium finish until a badly timed safety car saw him slip behind Lewis Hamilton.

He has had five top-four finishes this season, including two second places, and at odds-against he is worth backing for a top-three finish at a track where he is a proven performer.

Alpine double points finish - 3/1

Alpine have made a lot of progress since a disastrous start to the season and have picked up points in four straight races.

Their move up the order has been helped by Aston Martin and RB introducing upgrades that seem to have made their cars slower.

Pierre Gasly has earned four consecutive top-10 finishes, and wherever he is, his life-long frenemy and Alpine team-mate Esteban Ocon is never far away. Indeed, they are often too close, with their wheel-banging battle in Austria last week just the latest in a series of such clashes.

But the pair have both come home in the points in two of the last three races and look overpriced to do so at Silverstone.

Last year's British Grand Prix was one to forget for the French team, as Ocon was an early retirement with a mechanical issue and Gasly was taken out of a points-paying position following a crash with Lance Stroll's Aston Martin. But at the odds it is worth betting they have a better time of it this year.
