Belgian Grand Prix: Prediction, Tips and Odds

McLaren posted their first one-two finish for three years in Hungary on Sunday and the British team are expected to continue their strong mid-season form as the drivers reconvene at Spa for the Belgian Grand Prix.

Lando Norris to win - 10/11

There is one more race in the F1 world championship before the teams take their summer break and the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps looks set to be a cracker.

McLaren came out on top in Budapest with what was ultimately a comfortable one-two finish but they managed to emerge from that fantastic result with some glum faces after a team-orders row in the second half of the race.

The feeling that the victory was gifted to him took the shine off young Australian driver Oscar Piastri's first grand prix success as team-mate Lando Norris was asked to hand back the lead he had gained when the drivers made their final pit-stops.

The British driver finally complied after a period of negotiations over the team radios and it would be no surprise if he is able to secure his second victory of the season in Spa.

Norris and Piastri's task looks set to be made a fair bit easier as world champion Max Verstappen is expected to take a 10-place grid penalty for this race for exceeding his engine allocation for the season.

That decision is reflected in the race odds, with Verstappen a much bigger price than he has been for any race this season, although it also reflects that he has gone three rounds without winning for the first time since the 2021 season.

The Dutch driver has finished fifth, second and fifth in the last three races in Austria, Great Britain and Hungary but his car should be suited to the fast corners of the circuit.

Spa is a good venue for overtaking and Red Bull have absorbed penalties in this event successfully before. In 2022 Verstappen started 14th on the grid due to a similar engine penalty but still won the race, while in 2023 he shrugged off a five-place penalty for a gearbox change to win.

He should be able to recover into a solid points-scoring position but Norris could be out of sight by then.

Lewis Hamilton to finish third - 15/4

Mercedes have muscled their way to relevance in the F1 championship over recent races, with George Russell and Lewis Hamilton taking back-to-back wins in Austria and Great Britain and Hamilton again on the podium behind the McLarens in Hungary.

The team-orders wrangle between Norris and Piastri arose because the team wanted to pit Norris first in order to get an undercut and cover off Hamilton, and the seven-time world champion could be set to reach the podium again in Belgium.

Hamilton won at Spa in 2010, 2015, 2017 and 2020 and qualified third last year before finishing fourth in the race.

The Silver Arrows are currently more competitive than they were in their winless 2023 campaign and Hamilton may not be easy for Verstappen and the Ferraris to hunt down.

Sergio Perez top 6 finish - 5/6

Sergio Perez is enduring a miserable season in the second Red Bull and lies seventh in the championship after failing to record even a top-six finish in the last seven rounds.

There will be no excuses if he doesn't threaten the top six this week, though, as his car is well suited to the track and he has finished runner-up in Spa in each of the last two seasons.

He was a fair margin behind his team-mate Verstappen in both races, coming home 17 and 22 seconds behind the Dutch driver, but he was the clear best of the rest each time.

While Red Bull do not have the performance advantage over the other contenders that they enjoyed over the last two seasons, they should still be seen to good effect in Spa thanks to their aerodynamic performance and asking Perez to make the top six really shouldn't be too much.
