Football Betting Tips: Expect fast start from impressive England

After winning all three of their group matches at the Women's World Cup, England kick off their knockout-stage campaign on Monday with a last-16 tie against Nigeria in Brisbane.

Setting the scene…..

European champions England made a low-key start to their bid for World Cup glory, beating Haiti 1-0 in their opening Group D match and beating Denmark by the same scoreline on matchday two.

The Lionesses burst into life in their third fixture, thrashing China 6-1 thanks to a dazzling display from Chelsea winger Lauren James, who scored two and set up three of their six goals.

England are 3/10 to beat Nigeria in 90 minutes in the round of 16 but they cannot afford to be complacent against opponents who beat tournament co-hosts Australia 3-2 in a shock result in the group stage.

Fast starts have been a feature of England's success under Sarina Wiegman and the favourites will be determined to stamp their authority on Monday's last-16 tie as early as possible.

The Lionesses have scored at least one first-half goal in 18 of their last 21 internationals and they were leading at half-time and full-time in all three of their group games.

Georgia Stanway's retaken penalty put them ahead in the 29th minute against Haiti on matchday one before they opened the scoring in the sixth minute against Denmark and the fourth minute against China.

Wiegman's side were 3-0 up at the break against the Chinese and they should have the quality to break down a Nigeria defence who kept clean sheets in goalless draws with Canada and the Republic of Ireland in Group B.

James Milton's Tip:

Nigeria have exceeded expectations by reaching the last 16 but they conceded twice against Australia in their toughest group fixture and could find England's forwards too hot to handle in Brisbane.

The Lionesses looked back to their fluent best in the 6-1 rout of China and they took the lead inside the first half-hour in all three of their Group D fixtures.

England Women To Win 3-1 @ 12/1

Nigeria had two goalless draws in three group matches while England started their campaign with 1-0 wins over Haiti and Denmark but their last-16 meeting could be a more open contest.

England turned on the style against China in their final group fixture when Euro 2022 stars Alessia Russo, Lauren Hemp, Chloe Kelly and Rachel Daly all scored their first goals of the World Cup.

Chelsea's Lauren James has been superb in the Lionesses' last two victories, claiming three goals and three assists, and she can help England reach the quarter-finals with an entertaining win.

However, Nigeria pose an attacking threat, as they proved when silencing the home fans with a 3-2 group-stage victory over Australia, who had taken the lead in first-half injury-time.

James Milton's Tip:

England had to work hard for their narrow wins over Haiti and Denmark but they will be full of confidence following an impressive triumph against China and a 3-1 victory for the Lionesses appeals at 12/1 in the Correct Score betting.

Nigeria conceded twice in their win over an Australia side missing star striker Sam Kerr so they may struggle to keep England's resurgent forwards quiet in the round of 16.

England midfielder Keira Walsh has returned to training after a knee injury but is unlikely to be risked against Nigeria.

However, her Barcelona teammate Asisat Oshoala will have a key role to play for the underdogs and the striker could take advantage of any defensive errors from England.

With Euro 2022-winning captain Leah Williamson sidelined and Millie Bright only just returning from a long injury layoff, England have looked wobbly at the back at times.

They needed a couple of smart late saves from goalkeeper Mary Earps to shut out Haiti and conceded a second-half penalty against China so Oshoala, who scored 21 goals in 28 league appearances for Barcelona last season, could get chances.

James Milton's Tip:

Nigeria striker Oshoala had brief spells at Liverpool and Arsenal as a youngster before establishing herself as a ruthless finisher after joining Barcelona in 2019.

She scored her 31st international goal in the Group B win over the Matildas, who were unsettled by her pace, and at 5/1 she looks a tempting price to find the net against England.
