Every ATP year-end number one as Carlos Alcaraz dethrones Jannik Sinner in 2025

Carlos Alcaraz secured the year-end world number one status for the second time in his career following a sensational season which saw him triumph in the French Open and US Open.

With a tour-leading 70 wins and unmatched eight titles, the Spaniard pipped his adversary Jannik Sinner to top spot, who enjoyed a stellar season himself after adding a third and fourth Grand Slam title to his collection at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

As Alcaraz finishes top of the pile at the end of a breathtaking year, we've compiled a list of all the players to have ended the season as world number one since the ATP rankings began in 1973.

1. Ilie Nastase

Ilie Nastase was the first-ever ATP year-end world number one in 1973 following a season which saw the Romanian triumph at the French Open.

2. Jimmy Connors

Reaching world number one status for the first time in July 1974, eight-time Grand Slam champion Jimmy Connors topped the year-end charts in five successive seasons, ranging from 1974 to 1978.

3. Bjorn Borg

Achieving the French Open and Wimbledon double in 1979, Bjorn Borg topped the ATP rankings at the end of the year and repeated the feat to finish at the summit in 1980.

4. John McEnroe

John McEnroe was the top-ranked player at the end of four consecutive years from 1981 to 1984 and occupied world number one spot for a total of 170 weeks during his career.

5. Ivan Lendl

Equal to McEnroe by finishing top of the rankings on four separate years, Ivan Lendl was at the summit in 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1989, although he spent 100 weeks more as world number one than his old American rival.

6. Mats Wilander

Disrupting Lendl's run of year-end No.1 finishes is Mats Wilander, who finished 1988 as the top-ranked player after claiming the Australian Open, French Open and US Open titles in an astonishing year.

7. Stefan Edberg

Stefan Edberg was the year-end world number one in 1990 and 1991 after winning Wimbledon and the US Open in that period.

8. Jim Courier

American Jim Courier won five titles, including the Australian Open and French Open, and 69 matches on his way to his sole year-end world number one accolade in 1992.

9. Pete Sampras

Boasting the second-highest number of years at the top of the ATP rankings, Pete Sampras achieved year-end world number one status in six consecutive years from 1993 through to 1998 and spent a total of 286 weeks as the top-ranked male tennis player.

10. Andre Agassi

Another one-time member of the year-end world number one club, Andre Agassi finished top of the pile in 1999 following a year where he prevailed in the French Open and US Open.

11. Gustavo Kuerten

2000 belonged to Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten, who achieved year-end world number one status for the only time upon conclusion of the first season of the new century.

12. Lleyton Hewitt

Lleyton Hewitt succeeded Kuerten at the year-end summit and the Australian remained at the top for another year in 2002.

13. Andy Roddick

Andy Roddick's career-best season in 2003 saw him achieve year-end world number one status as he triumphed at the US Open and claimed six ATP titles.

14. Roger Federer

2004 essentially marked the dawn of the golden era as Roger Federer inherited year-end world number one from Roddick in that year and retained that status for four of the next five seasons, finishing top of the pile in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009.

15. Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal eclipsed his long-term rival Federer as a five-time year-end world number one in 2019 after previously finishing top of the pile in 2008, 2010, 2013 and 2017.

16. Novak Djokovic

The player who holds the record for most year-end finishes as world number one and will not be surpassed anytime soon.

Novak Djokovic has been at the summit upon conclusion of eight different seasons, starting from 2011 to 2012, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2020, 2021 and finally 2023, with the 24-time Grand Slam champion spending a record 401 weeks at the top of the rankings.

17. Andy Murray

Andy Murray's sensational 2016 where he triumphed at Wimbledon and won another eight titles ensured he finished top of the rankings at the end of the season for the only time in his career.

18. Carlos Alcaraz

Winning his maiden Grand Slam in title at the 2022 US Open, Carlos Alcaraz became the youngest-ever ATP world number one and retained that status at the end of the year.

2025 saw Alcaraz end the year top of the pile again after a staggering season which saw him win as many titles as matches he'd lost.

19. Jannik Sinner

Jannik Sinner was crowned year-end world number one in 2024 following a remarkable campaign which saw him win his first two Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open and US Open.
