Everton's 2022/23 performance

Frank Lampard was in charge of Everton at the start of 2022/23, eager to improve on a 16th-place finish in 2021/22.

However, they failed to win any of their opening six games - losing two and drawing four - and sat 18th when Lampard was sacked following a 2-0 loss at West Ham in January.

Dyche was drafted in and although he oversaw a 1-0 win over league leaders Arsenal in his first game at the helm, the former Burnley boss struggled to pick up results consistently.

Everton went on to win five times under Dyche, losing seven and drawing six.

A run of one loss from their final five games, including a win on the final day over Bournemouth, was enough to keep them clear of the relegation zone by two points.

Everton 2023/24 prospects

Everton haven't been too active in the transfer market this summer and that doesn't bode well if they want to kick on in 2023/24.

Ashley Young, who is now 38, has signed on a one-year deal and winger Arnaut Danjuma has joined the club on a season-long loan from Villarreal.

For a club that have been battling against relegation for two successive seasons, the squad clearly needs a revamp to try and boost their hopes of climbing up the standings.

Developments off the field, primarily the building of a new stadium, could also be placing extra pressure on the squad and manager as they look to ensure Premier League football is on the agenda when they move to Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium for 2024/25.

Enjoying a successful campaign will likely hang heavily on the shoulders of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who showed his class when scoring 16 league goals in 2020/21.

However, the England international has been restricted to just 34 league appearances over the past two seasons due to injury.

Everton manager - Sean Dyche

Dyche took charge on 30th January and was tasked with trying to keep Everton in the Premier League.

The 52-year-old, who had been out of work since April 2022 when he was sacked by Burnley, achieved that goal and now has the opportunity over pre-season to really put his stamp on the squad.

He started his managerial career with Watford in 2011 but lasted just 49 games with the Hornets, despite leading them to 11th place in the Championship - their best finish in four years.

Burnley came calling in 2012 and he spent a decade at Turf Moor, taking them up to the Premier League for the 2014/15 season.

Of Dyche's 10 seasons with Burnley, seven were spent in the Premier League and they secured a spot in the Europa League play-off round after finishing seventh in 2017/18.

We know from his time at Burnley that he likes to deploy a 4-4-2 formation, but he was unable to do that last term due to the make-up of his squad.

Everton rotated between a 4-2-3-1 and a 3-4-2-1 under Dyche due to the lack of options in attack and he may be looking to add another striker before the transfer window closes.

Everton Key Player - Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Calvert-Lewin has been part of the set-up at Goodison Park since 2016 and he became a regular in 2017/18.

The 26-year-old scored 21 goals across all competitions in 2020/21, including 16 in the Premier League, but has been blighted by injuries over the past two campaigns.

Everton will be desperate to keep the England international healthy and he is the perfect fit for Dyche's preferred style of play.

Dyche likes to utilise the wings and get deliveries into the box, something Calvert-Lewin should thrive from.

Everton One to Watch - Jarrad Branthwaite

Everton signed Jarrad Branthwaite from Carlisle in January 2020, but he has only made 13 appearances across all competitions.

The 21-year-old went out on loan to Blackburn in 2020/21 and spent last term in the Eredivisie with PSV Eindhoven where he made 36 appearances and won the KNVB Cup.

The centre-back will be looking to stake a claim for a regular starting role in 2023/24 and Branthwaite could freshen up an ageing backline.
