Estevao: Injury timeline & potential World Cup permutations

Chelsea winger Estevao could miss the World Cup after he was injured in Chelsea's defeat by Manchester United on Saturday.

The 18-year-old Brazilian has been enjoying a breakout campaign at Stamford Bridge, but was forced off after just 16 minutes against Michael Carrick's side last weekend.

The Brazil international has been a regular feature for the Selecao under Carlo Ancelotti but his hopes of starring at the upcoming World Cup in North America have taken a major blow following reports surrounding the severity of his injury.

What is Estevao's injury?

Speaking earlier this week Liam Rosenior revealed that Estevao was in tears at half-time after he forced off injured after seemingly pulling his hamstring whilst running through on goal.

A subsequent report from The Athletic has claimed he has suffered a grade four hamstring injury after undergoing a scan at Cobham.

How long will Estevao be out for?

Estevao will almost certainly be out for the remainder of the club season which will come as a significant blow for a Chelsea side that still harbour faint hopes of clinching a UEFA Champions League place.

The injury will also likely see Palmeiras star miss out on Brazil's World Cup campaign, a devastating blow for a player who has all the ability needed to make an impact for his country on the very biggest stage.

Which fixtures will he miss?

  • Chelsea v Nottingham Forest - 4 May
  • Liverpool v Chelsea - 9 May
  • Chelsea v Tottenham - 17 May
  • Sunderland v Chelsea - 24 May

Standard hamstring injury recovery time

Hamstring injuries are relatively common amongst professional footballers and the recovery time can vary.

Mild strains usually result in a week on the sidelines but a tear clearly results in a longer timeframe.

Significant tears can require around three months of rest before any training can begin, whereas the full recovery time for more severe issues - such as the one Estevao has suffered - can be up to six months.
